Expensive but upscale dining experience in modern interior. We went on a fixed-price night and generally enjoyed ourselves with a group of friends.

Based upon favorable reviews from various sources, my family and I went here to celebrate a special occasion during a weekend in Alexandria. The person being celebrated in originally from North Carolina and was looking forward to the Southern style cuisine, in particular the much touted stewed tomatoes and spoonbread. While the decor was lovely and the staff friendly, service was a bit slow. The food was ok, though I expected more from a $20 chicken breast. My campanions did enjoy the rabbit and the spoonbread. Both were well prepared and rang true to their southern roots. The biggest dissapointmets were the stewed tomatoes- very pungent and acidic, and the desserts. We tried the coconut cake with white chocolate buttercream- inedible; the mocha napoleon- beautiful but lacking the rich chocolate flavors promised by its appearance; finally, brown sugar pie -sweet and homey, although it was accompanied by tiny odd tasting berries that seemed a strange pairing. On the ride back to our hotel, our driver said that our reaction was common: the consesus seems to be that the critics love the Majestic, regular people, not so much. Perhaps it was an off night for the kitchen, but I do not plan to return for a second chance.
