“Incredible convenience to Washington DC area”
Reviewed December 16, 2010

We had extra points left in our Wyndham Timeshare and decided to use them for a little vacation near home. Actually this was very convenient for my husband because he could actually walk to work from this location! We spent three nights in a 2 bedroom, which was the first time we had stayed in a 2 bedroom at this resort. the living area is very large in this unit. We had a Christmas party with some friends one evening in our unit and were able to get parking passes for our guests so that they could get free parking. We spent another 2 nights in a one bedroom. Wyndham offered to move our things from one room to the next during the transition. We like the size of the 1 bedroom for 2 people. We love the location of the Wyndham Old Alexandria. It is right across the street from Metro, so you can actually fly into Reagan National and get by without a car. It is only a mile walk to the Potomac River with lots of restaurants and shopping. It is easy to walk around Old Town or there is a free trolley that runs up and down King Street. There is so much to do that the hotel does not have a lot of sponsored activities. There was a wine & cheese event on Monday late afternoon-early evening. You can check out board games if you choose and you can use the small inside pool at the Hilton. Cookies and popcorn are offered in the common areas. Both of our units were on the side of the building that faced the Metro and train tracks. Some people have complained about the noise, but we have to say we slept very well with very little noise. The trains did not use their horns until at least 6:30 AM each morning and that wasn't every day. We also did not hear horns after 8 PM. I suppose it is what you are used to as to whether the trains would keep you awake. We live several miles away from tracks, but when the leaves are off the trees in the winter we hear the trains from our house. Semis speeding on highways tend to keep me awake more than trains. We did not hear our neighbors in either of the units. I think the noise was a very comfortable level and not having to deal with DC area traffic is a huge bonus. Our granddaughter also was very entertained watching the trains one of the days that we stayed in. It was very cold the days that we stayed there and we were happy that so many restaurants delivered. There is a Wholefood Grocery nearby for a few groceries. La Porta Restaurant is also an easy walk and offers 2 meals and a bottle of wine for $28.99 on Mon & Tues nights. We drove over to National Harbor one evening for dinner. It would be nice if there were a free or less expensive shuttle offered from one Wyndham to the other. By the time you pay for the water taxi for 2 people it is more expensive than paying the $11 parking garage fee and there is plenty of parking at National Harbor. We stayed here just for the convenience of enjoying the Old Alexandria area without having to drive in. It's a great place for seeing Washington DC though with the Metro so nearby! And last but not least the wireless internet was free and fast..

Pros: Comfortable, clean, upscale, well-equipped suite kitchens, washer and dryer for guests use on every floor, easy parking at the next door Hilton parking garage, friendly, knowledgeable, helpful staff who remembered my name and acted like they like where they work, safe and well-lit neighborhood, a block from the King Street Metro station , a couple blocks from Whole Foods store, many neighborhood restaurants and shops of all kinds within walking distance or short cab ride or King Street trolley. The rooms I saw were tastefully decorated with calm Federal colors and prints from American history. Enjoyed an expansive view of the Capitol Building and Washington Monument from my window, and watching planes land at nearby Reagan Airport (not noisy). The ride to L'Enfant Metro Station in D.C. takes about 35 minutes. Cons: rooms on the side of the building near the Metro tracks are noisy while Metro runs 6am-1am; the interior walls are not well insulated so neighboring family's conversations, kid exuberance and crying were loud and clear; no vending machines on the floors - you have to walk down to lobby to the little snack and essentials shop for your water bottle; the bathtub did not drain well and the icemaker in the fridge did not work; reported but not repaired during my stay.

This hotel is beautiful, convenient to Washington D.C., and had a 2 bdrm suite (room 107) which was perfect for a family of four. One bedroom had two queen beds and the other had one king bed. Both bedrooms had their own TV and the living room had both a TV and DVD player. A good selection of DVDs was available for $3 rental at the front desk. The sitting area was as big as a typical condo living room, and the kitchen was full sized with basic equipment including a coffee pot, microwave, and even a blender. There is a two-computer "business center" off the lobby. There is high speed wireless internet, but it's inconsistently available. Sometimes I had to walk my laptop out to the lobby to get it to connect. I wouldn't have bothered except for the need to get some work done.

We didn't use the swimming pool, but I think they have one as well as an exercise facility. There is a separate room off the lobby with basic snack food items and each floor has a complimentary full sized washer and full sized dryer for guest use. I wouldn't have any hesitation at all in recommending it except for one thing - It's a vacation resort time share and you literally can not walk through the lobby without being accosted by an aggressively over-friendly sales representative pushing you to attend a one hour presentation on the time share ownership program. It begins with a "welcome package" of toiletries brought to your room by a sales rep. before you've even had a chance to get the suitcases into the bedroom. They offer you $100 cash if you'll go - and I suppose that some people would find that worth a lost hour of time, but we were in Washington for a family vacation and didn't want to give up our time. I politely declined using the typical kinds of responses such as "I don't think we're interested", or "There's really no chance of us buying a time share." Nothing short of "Go Away!" would have worked. It was so annoying that it got to the point where I'd peek my head out of our door to see if it was safe to cross the lobby. If you can stand the hard sales pitch, you'd be hard pressed to find a hotel that was nicer, more reasonably priced for what you get, or more convenient to a Metro stop (literally around the corner). I just wish they'd cool it with the hard sell. I wouldn't go back there because of it. There's a Hilton next door and an Embassy Suites across the street.

We enjoyed our 3 day stay in Alexandria, Va. We had a suite. The extra bedroom has 2 doubles not 2 queens as stated. The rooms were very clean and nicely appointed. The staff was very attentive to our needs. The location was ideal for hopping on the metro for sites around Alexandria and Washington, D.C. . Lots of shops and restaurants. A free trolley runs the length of King St. from metro station to riverfront. I would certainly go back!

Very nice hotel and close to everything. We stayed in a 2 bedroom unit this past weekend and had a great time. There are a lot of shops and restaurants nearby and it is about mile walk down to the Potomoc. The metro is right around the corner from the hotel providing easy access to DC. The only knock is the gym is small although you do have access to the Hilton's which is bit larger and the Hilton's indoor pool (the buildings are connected so you walk out the Wyndham's gym and through a small hallway and you are in the Hilton's gym).

My husband and I stayed here for a vacation in Washington, D.C. We loved the proximity to the Metro station (literally right across the street). We flew into the Ronald Reagan airport, hopped on the Metro with our suitcases, and were at the hotel within 15 minutes.

The front desk staff was very helpful and the concierge knew all of the best places to eat locally in Alexandria (which we did nightly to save money since dining in D.C. can be very expensive). Our only qualm with them came after we checked in. As soon as we got to our room, the front desk called us to ask if we'd taken their pen. We checked to make sure and told them no. A few minutes later the woman from the desk was knocking on our door demanding her pen back! I told her I was sorry, but we really did not take her pen. She left and about an hour later she called while we were getting ready to go out to tell us she'd found her pen on the floor behind the desk. It was frustrating to be hounded over something so small and silly, especially when we knew we hadn't taken it.

The suite itself was gigantic though, with a full kitchen, dining room, living room, bedroom w/sitting area & king bed, and a bathroom with two separate rooms (one had a sink and the jacuzzi, the other had a sink, toilet and shower stall - very convenient!). We loved the large, comfy king bed, but it was sometimes difficult to sleep at night because our room was on the side of the hotel where the Metro and Amtrak train tracks were. The horns and track noise were pretty loud and didn't stop until 1am, then started back around 6am.

The kitchen and bathroom both came stocked with some amenities. The bathroom had nice shampoo, soap, a shower cap, and a linen closet with lost of extra towels (which was good because we never received a clean-up service from housekeeping the entire 5 days we were there). The kitchen had cooking utensils and a basket of things like tea, lemonade mix, etc.

Overall, I was a little disappointed with the lack of service, but pleased with the concierge knowledge and help, the excellent location (even if it was noisy), and the huge size of our room. We definitely enjoyed coming back to our hotel after a long day of walking around Washington.

We stayed here for a week and really loved the property. it is clean, quiet, comfortable, and convenient to everything. An easy walk to the grocery store and the metro. Definitey at the top of the list as far as Wyndhams go. Timeshare "owner's update" short and sweet; not pushy at all.
