“Enjoyed outside seating”
Reviewed June 29, 2014 via mobile

There are only three tables outside but it was worth it on a beautiful cool summer evening.
Generally the food and service were average. Not bad but nothing phenomenal. We had the calamari, which was good but not as tender as some we have had - the breading was a little heavy. The sauce was spicy but very good if you like spicy.
The manicotti was ok and the fresh spinach was a welcome addition otherwise it would have been a bit bland.
The chicken with eggplant and cream sauce was very good and the best dish at the table.
Service was average. Nobody offered us dessert or coffee otherwise it was fine.

“Wish I could have given it an Excellant”
Reviewed June 29, 2014 via mobile

This was a great little restaurant and had a romantic atmosphere. Unfortunately there was a very loud wedding upstairs with screaming children and extremely LOUD music!! Call ahead and find out if they are having any events upstairs to avoid a bad evening. Ok, with that being said. The food Great!! service, great!! Location, great!! I would give it another try the next time I'm in town.

“A Nice Place to Relax and Enjoy the View in Old Town”
Reviewed June 24, 2014

This restaurant has been in the same location for many years, serving very good Italian fare at reasonable prices. It captures both the feel of Old Town Alexandria and, also, the type of restaurant all of us expect to find in the small towns of Italy. The menu offers a nice selection of dishes at reasonable prices for this area of Northern Virginia. The atmosphere is great for a date or to take your spouse for a night on the town. Ask for one of the tables in the window for a view of the crowd passing by on King Street. The staff is also what you would expect of a small Italian restaurant -- attentive and efficient. Our server Michael paced our meal perfectly. We have been coming here for 39 years. Even though we now live in the Midwest, this is one of our first places to eat when we return to this part of the world.

“Go for the shrimp!”
Reviewed June 22, 2014 via mobile

The chef's specials were really good...well presented and cooked...great sauces and ingredients. The lobster and scallops came with fresh muscles and a nice butter sauce over spinach fettuccine and vegies, but the "to die for" dish was the crab-stuffed shrimp with a fabulous creamy tomato sauce and broccoli. Good wine selection.

“Italian food.... is it?”
Reviewed June 6, 2014

First of all. I bought a coupon on GroupOn for this restaurant. We had the table already reserved and we didn't have the possibility to have a great choice on food.
Second, I am a true Italian, in D.C. for work.
The environment was very friendly, a nice waiter assisted us (my wife and I) at the table, he was very gentle and very available on our call, but he was from Pakistan.....but, isn't Il Porto an Italian restaurant?! ....whatever.
The food was...average. We eat sea food based dishes. Tagliolini (a particular spaghetti-like pasta) with sea food, and grigliata (mixed grilled fish). The taste was nice, I almost felt the aroma of Mediterranean sea in those fish.
But, my wife felt bad with the stomach the same evening.... of course because of the not fresh fish.
How can you realize if a shrimp is fresh or defrosted? Easy, the fresh one is tender, you an separate the single pieces and the rest stays firm on the plate...the defrosted one? When you give a bite you feel it kind of flour-ish....the cut is not clear and it's gummy.
Well, they were gummy and flour-ish.
Even if we went there with a coupon, we could see the prices on the menu, and i can say that it is overpriced, 4 or 5 bucks less per dish can make the difference about coming back or choose a pizza.
By the way, my wife did not enjoy it, for me it was just average.
There is better.
