My daughter and I wandered into this restaurant by chance one Saturday night. It has an old fashioned feel that we enjoyed. The food was good and the waiter attentive. It was just what we were looking for. I would eat there again in a minute

This restaurant was recommended by 2 strangers so we tried it. The pasta is homemade. Very good. Give it a try!

Il Porto has been a family destination for many years. While the establishment still has a number of bright spots, it's not what it used to be -- chiefly because it's reliability to serve delicious food during each visit has waned.

The restaurant is located in a building with a rather colorful history (let the menu explain) along a tourist-oriented stretch of lower King Street about two blocks from the river. The first floor dining area features several distinct alcoves of tables with low ceilings and white stucco walls. The second floor dining area is a large room capable of handling couples and larger groups alike. The restaurant still maintains a pleasant ambiance, but the decor has largely remained unchanged for years and now looks in need of an upgrade or facelift.

The menu includes standard Italian fare. Over the years, family favorites have included the Florentine manicotti, chicken primavera, chicken caprice, and portobello chicken (no longer on the menu). When the kitchen is on, these dishes and others have been fresh and very flavorful. When the kitchen is off, the food has been disappointingly bland or unbalanced in flavor. Despite the hit or miss with the entrees, the bread and small salads have always been consistently good. And Il Porto offers some of the best tiramasu in greater D.C.

Staff is generally pleasant, cordial, and prompt. It's exceedingly rare to experience slow service. Prices are commensurate with the area.

If you're in the mood for Italian, I still recommend giving Il Porto a try, and I strongly recommend going for dinner on a Saturday or Sunday over a weekday. I truly hope the consistency of the kitchen can return to its old standard!

She: Italian Sausage & Peppers w/marinara over spaghetti
He: Lasagna
Both were done to perfection.
Service was attentive, but not overdone.
Bread was awesome.
Wine chilled perfectly.
Not inexpensive, but a good selection on the menu.
Rasberry/White Chocolate tart at the end was wonderful.

This used to be a good restaurant. Menu changed and you no longer get a side of pasta with your dinner without extra cost and had to pay extra for sauce on my eggplant parmesan. Don't waste your time go to dolce vita in Fairfax
