“Very historic and good food.”
Reviewed April 18, 2013

Lunch was very good. Had crab cake sandwich. Burgers were excellent. Very quiet. Expected George Washington to pop out.
Loved looking at decor and pictures. Will visit museum next time we are in Old Town.

“Colonial restaurant in Old Town Alexandria”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

The place is very nice with an old time colonial feel. Our meals were fine for the most part except for my prime rib which was very fatty. I would have preferred that they trimmed the fat off before serving. The bread was excellent as it had a hint of sweetness to it. The service was fine, but the waitress seemed harried.

“What Happened to Gadsby's?”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

I've been going to Gadsby's since 1986, and was very fond of the place, largely because of the ambiance and service, but the food had always been quite good. I went in September 2012 and found the food passable and certainly a large quantity of it. However at this visit (April 11, 2013), I was very disappointed with the food. The crabcake appetizer was pleasant, and the berry trifle was nice, but the entrees were mediorcre at best. The lemon chicken had no hint of lemon in it and was oversalted. The roast potatoes were soggy, but the spinach was nice. My companion's seafood newburg was odd with sauce poured over shrimp that were only partially shelled lying on a bed of crab that wasn't sauced at all. What they called risotto was a glob of plain rice stuck together in a ball. No bread was offered.

In the past, they used to have dishes that made sense with the 18th century, and a beautifully dressed small salad came with the meal. Add to that the Sally Lunn (bread) that was brought to your table hot. I would be happy to have them go back to the old menu and focus on quality, not quanitity. Mediocre at best ... I can do much better at home. I'm so sad...had been one of my FAVORITE places.

“A Historical Experience”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

To dine where George Washington and John Adams once ate was such a wonderful experience. This is a very quaint restaurant that has a lovely ambiance. I took a tour group to the restaurant recently. We had a great time. It brought you back in time to this country's founding. To think that the great men and women of the country's founding were visitors there really added something special. The food was good. I had the prime rib and the gingerbread pudding. Both were very tasty. The wait staff dresses in period costume so that adds to the experience. They were also wonderful staff who took good care of our group. The night we visited they had a gentleman in period costume who came to our room and entertained us. My group loved it. It made the night extra special. A wonderful place to visit. Perhaps include it with a trip to Mount Vernon. Great time.
