We came here on the recommendation of some friends who live locally ... and also got talking to a couple at the next table who live just a block away (so guess it's a locals hangout!)... No reservations though ...one of our hobby horses! ;-)

I've seen the bad reviews about disinterested and poor service but we did not experience that... our waitress was obviously new and inexperienced, but very helpful, polite and chatty (interesting to talk to as she was also well traveled)...

Our food did take longer than expected to come out, but to be honest it wasn't an issue at all... the wine bar is a very relaxing environment and we wanted an evening out... we were not there to just feed our faces and go home ;-)

The food was delicious... everything we ordered was fabulous... soup, fried green tomatoes and both salads (one with shrimp) were prepared fresh and very good indeed! The bread was some of the best we've had in the US....

We don't usually stretch to desserts, but they comped us 2 desserts for having to wait a long time for our food (totally unnecessary, but it gave us an opportunity to try their desserts too); the olive oil cake was to die for and the peanut butter pie was similarly fab!

We would definitely come back and definitely recommend...

We went there to have a nice lunch to celebrate. Sandwiches are waaaay overpriced. They come with NOTHING, but cost around $12 each. The only saving grace was the soba Thai noodles, but they were an outrageous $4.99. Our lunch for 2 was over $30. Good thing we had water or else I would have paid almost $40. That's outrageous. Balducci's is a much better choice, faster service, more menu items, and their sandwiches are not only more delicious, they're 1/2 the price. The room of the interior is painted a matte black. It's like a morgue. Ugh.

This property is part of the group which includes Vermillion, Firehouse, Food and Grain etc. in Old Town Alexandria. It functions as an overpriced gourmet deli / bistro of sorts.
The food at the restaraunt side is decent. However the wine bar is a concern.
Most wines by the glass are offered in 3 size pours, all over priced. The "sparkling" and champagne pours are absurd. ( not so much the price as the presentation). A $16 glass of a sparkling wine is measured to the milliliter first poured into a graduated beaker then repoured into a flute !!!. Pretty expensive bubbles lost. I understand there are house rules as the tender explained , but seriously.....a marked measure on a glass makes much more sense. The overall procedure DOES NOT add class.

I very much enjoyed my experience at Society Fair. They have a great wine selection, interesting drinks and a good menu. I had the beef bourguignon and pommes aligot. Skip the pommes - but the beef was solid. It was a charming place and probably my favorite place in Old Town. Would go back.

So, despite our disappointing happy hour experience at Virtue Feed Grain (see Dear Chef Armstrong (part I), we nonetheless proceeded to another of our favorite Chef Armstrong Old Town establishments Society Fair. There we intended to grab a couple of your unique sandwiches, some sides, and drinks for a waterfront dinner picnic on Saturday of the Memorial holiday weekend. We knew Society Fair closes at 6pm on Sunday's but figured as long as we were there before 5:30pm, we could still build our picnic. But no--the girl behind the deli counter sheepishly announced that no sandwiches were available because they were closed. So apparently, the store hours are only advisory and the individual departments have the discretion to close early? What's the deal? Do Society Fair's concessions operate under separate hours or are the employee's making arbitrary decisions of which you might otherwise disapprove? You may want to pop-in to the Fair and check out what's going on. Thankfully, Balducci's saved the evening--they stay open till 8pm--really stay open. Capt J
