“Great Nature Park Close to DC”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2013 via mobile

I have been to a number of national parks, state parks, and local parks, but Huntley Meadows ranks up there with the best. The Deer Trail offers a great walk through the woods, but the highlight is the Heron Trail. It goes over raised walkways through a marsh, and you get a chance to see all types of animals. We saw some geese with baby goslings, lots of turtles, a heron, fish, tadpoles, and more. There were also impressive beaver dams and a beaver lodge. You wouldn't think you could get such a great nature experience this close to DC, and that makes it more impressive. Expect a lot of walking if you are going to do the full loop, but it's worth it. If I lived nearby, I would be a this park almost every day. Oh, and the people at the visitor center are very friendly and helpful, too. This park was a fantastic experience.

“SNAKE FEST”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

The dreaded field trip site for elementary school. I've never gone and not seen a snake. Nature at it.s finest, so very close to housing, malls, and shopping. It is in the middle of the suburbs. A great place for your little naturalist. Just watch what sticks you pick up!!!

“Wetlands retreat full of interesting birdlife”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 18, 2013

One of the best birding/walking preserves in the Washington area. The Park Service has laid out some fine wooden walkways through the wetlands and woods and you can see a wide variety of birds--both local and migratory--especially mornings and in the Spring. About 30 minutes south of Washington DC. Ample parking. Seldom crowded.

“Great location for nature hiking and photography”

Great place for photography, particularly in the morning. The beavers keep the area marshy. There's a lot of history here, but you have to look for it....

“Hidden gem within Fairfax County”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2013

Great place for waterfowl viewing. Beavers & muskrats, deer, bluebirds, some raptors. Walk through the woods or on the boardwalk to the water. Stop in the visitors' center. Best wildlife viewing early morning and evening. Enjoy! It's free, but you can leave a donation.
