It is nice walking the path through Old Town. There are street musicians and artists doing caricatures. You can catch a water taxi here as well. There are two small parks in Old Town. The one a bit north is the larger (Founders Park ?)

I really enjoy the waterfront. There are festivals on the lawns, great restaurants, shopping, art shops and lots of other stores. Parking isn't awful if you're willing to walk a few blocks. It's very romantic for a walk after dinner or lunch. It's safe and people are ways around.

Potomac River area, good for strolling, people watching, eating. Shops nearby. The torpedo factory is here on the waterfront..artists selling their wares inside here...pricey

As a transplanted NY'er living in Old Town, I just wanted to give a suggestion - if you are visiting Washington DC for business or pleasure, you should definitely try to stay in Old Town rather than DC. But save your pennies beforehand, as it can be a little pricey. Definitely a walking area, but there is quick, easy access to the Metro, which will get you into DC in no time. Old Town features lots of restaurants (some are a bit expensive) and nice little shops. It's business traveler- and family- friendly. Two days here is more than enough time to check everything out. Come in the Fall if you can, when it's not so crowded with tourists and it's easier to move up and down King Street (main thoroughfare).
