The Torpedo Factory is a converted factory that feels very industrial. All three levels are very light, bright and open. It's basically a way for artists to rent a studio space to work, but also exhibit their crafts. All types of media can be seen here - water color, oils, metal work, glass work, clay. There is no fee, clean bathrooms and a small museum gift shop with fun and unique gift ideas for mostly children. A tiny little cafe provides food & beverages. On the third floor, we found the anthropology exhibit. There were many local treasures in there that inspired us to seek out other landmarks in the town. I don't think little kids would appreciate this art center, but certainly any art lover should make it a destination while in Old Town.

One of the largest visual arts centers I have ever encountered, and extremely well organized and deliciously presented to the public. With well over 100 visual artists in residence, this community creates quality products and it is simply fabulous to just browse around for hours. Plus there is an onsite archaeology museum, a school and galleries galore.
I fell in love with one artist - a lady who took heavy-duty glass cylinders, filled them with noteable glass fired objects, broken glass and water, and a bubbler from the bottom, and lit the whole assembly. Simply fabulous. I recommend you set aside some leisure time and wander slowly along the multiple floors. The individual artist enclosures are welcoming and you might even learn something!

Oh, just go! It's just as historic as anywhere else- from a torpedo factory to artists' galleries. It wasn't crowded on a rainy Monday afternoon.

I so enjoyed browsing the many studios and galleries. There is such a variety of art and craft, certainly something for everyone interested in art. You can meet and observe the artists at work or just browse the galleries. It is mostly priced reasonably. The factory is right on the waterfront. There is also a store as part of the complex that is eclectic in its clothing and odds and ends for purchase. A very enjoyable place.

Lots of great studios fill the nooks and crannies of this building. Some very creative ideas are being applied to art. Many artists are friendly and the work for sale spans the spectrum from well-done to quirky to super fun.
