“Family-friendly and close to D.C.”
Reviewed May 5, 2014

My family and I stayed here for a week for a mix of business trip and vacation. Ask for the 4th floor to avoid the tour/high school bus groups. Here is our summary:
Suite: The suite is very comfortable for 4 people, complete with a mini kitchenette (bring your own dish soap) and a dish towel is provided. We ate a couple of our dinners in our suite and it was very comfortable. We liked the swivel TV, so that the children could sleep, and we could watch a program in the sitting area.
Housekeeping: The room was always well presented and well cleaned each day. Every other day we did have to request an additional towel (only 3 sets were provided). A couple of days we also had to request plates and/or coffee sachets. In my opinion, more housekeepers are needed for this hotel, to flip the rooms, due to the large groups we encountered during our stay.
Pool: We were disappointed with the pool. The hours were only from 5 - 10 p.m. and it is barely 5' deep. There is a lifeguard on duty, but he spent more time watching his smartphone than watching the people in the pool. If you plan to use the hot tub, ask the lifeguard to turn the temperature up and then wait 15 minutes for the water to be hot.
Fitness Area: Good range of free weights and machines.
Front Desk: Kudos to training the front reception. Everyone was polite, friendly, knew the area, gave great directions for the nature walk to the Metro. Special thank you to Jennifer who helped our family several times during our stay.
Breakfast: Good quality - hot and cold cereal, hot eggs, turkey sausage, bagels, sweet breads, muffins, oranges, bananas, several flavors of yogurt, walnuts, slivered almonds, cranberries, juice, milk, and of course, medium and dark roasted coffee or tea. Thank you for serving breakfast to the bus groups in your meeting rooms, rather than in the main breakfast area!
Shuttle bus: The shuttle bus is shared with the Holiday Inn Express next door and only takes Springhill Suite guests to the Metro (not to Old Town Alexandria). Fred, the driver was very friendly and very accommodating.
Other Guests: This can be a noisy hotel from Friday - Sunday due to bus/student groups, so if you are a light sleeper, bring your earplugs. We were on the front side and the traffic did not bother us, but again, if you aren't used to the sound of traffic, bring earplugs.
Advice to Management: Add more housekeeping staff.
Overall, we really enjoyed this hotel!

Room Tip: Ask for the 4th floor (away from any large groups)

We booked a room here in Priceline for a 4 night visit to the DC area. This is a clean and friendly establishment and I cant say enough about how comfortable and clean the room was, breakfast was good quality and well stocked and friendly Staff. The shuttle to the Metro was flawless and a necessary perk since there is NOTHING near this location to walk to within a mile.
We learned a valuable lesson on timing and will avoid traveling to DC in the Spring in the future. I am not surprised that we got this room at a reasonable rate since the entire place was teaming with school groups. Although the hotel did a nice job serving the large groups breakfast in a separate area, the noise these kids cause was many times unbearable. They run around all evening until 10pm and start running and yelling again at 6am EVERY morning. We also had to avoid the pool and hot tub because of this. This is a great place to stay if you don't mind being far away from everything and stay here when school groups are not in residence.

Also, make sure your room is not located near the housekeeping supply room on the 1st level, the staff are extremely loud and few speak English when you ask them to pipe down. This could be easily remedied by management.

Room Tip: AVOID room 157, it is directly across from the Housekeeping supply room and you will not sleep at al...

We stayed here one night on a family road trip and we were quite pleased with the amenities and service. Very new and clean and spacious rooms - the King size suites aren't really different rooms, just one room with a divider, but they fit our family of 4 just fine. Quick service, substantial breakfast included, free parking, and convenient location. Great value for money.

We had a mixed experience at this Marriott.

Location wise, this is a great choice due to it's proximity to D.C. attractions and very close to Old Town part of Alexandria, so you can just go there for dinner as opposed to dealing with downtown D.C.

Another positive note, the pool had a life guard on duty, which is a nice touch for any issues.

Now for the negatives, the property itself is very close to the road, which is a very busy one, with that, we heard several times a night police, fire and ambulances passing by. Our room was on the front side, so maybe having a room on the backside could help with that.

Right next door is the Holiday Inn, I would believe there setup would have the same issue as well with road noise, as would be the Hampton Inn down the road.

In addition, the property seems to be very nice, with that, its very shocking the poor quality of the small details.

The bathroom door could NOT be locked, due to the fact that the latch does NOT line up with the door jamb. This is clearly a build issue, poor quality.

But very new looking in appearance. We had our young children with us, so this small detail is quite annoying since the kids can barge into the bathroom as they please.

Another small detail, the down spout of the shower was not perfectly plumb up and down. It was possibly 15 degree off to the left, didn't make it work any less, but just poor in appearance since everything else appears NEW.

One last fixable thing, during breakfast hours, maybe the staff can put out temporary tables so that guest have places to eat, otherwise many families were waiting for tables to be freed up. This is a D.C. area property, so I'd imagine the hotel is quite busy often with tourist traffic.

Otherwise, the staff was very pleasant and they did greeted me as a "Silver" member and the hotel IS a great location due to its proximity to the D.C. attractions. But it is in the small details that were quite disappointing for a newer property.

The Holiday Inn next door and Hampton Inn down the road would give all the same positive's mentioned above, not sure about the details of the hotel itself though.

Hope this helps anyone planning on taking their family to D.C.

Room Tip: Lots of road nice if your room is towards the front, may help to get a room on the backside.

We stayed here for 6 nights in early April. The hotel staff was great, very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. The shuttle to the Metro was great and the Metro is so much easier than trying to drive and park in the DC area. Close to tons of restaurants and shopping (for the bits and pieces I forgot to pack). Mount Vernon was 20 mins away and well worth the trip. The included breakfast was basic but filling; could have used a bit more variety (1 day had a great bacon, but the other 5 had turkey sausage). The pool was nice and the lifeguard most helpful. The room was more than comfortable and spacious for myself, hubby, and our 10 yr old son. The mini-fridge and microwave were great for a quick snack or soda. The only complaint I had is there was no place a person could sit outside and enjoy the day after walking all day. We got a great rate and will stay here again when in the DC area.

This is definitely one of the cleaner and bigger ones that I have been to when staying around the DC area. 400 square feet with very comfortable beds. Very quiet neighborhood and plenty of parking, Breakfast selection is very good though I would pass on the scrambled eggs. The elevator was down but quickly fixed over the Easter weekend. Fairly convenient to the Mall area. Very good price for the amenities.

Would definitely stay here again!
