In a nutshell, my partner and I checked in to the Lorien Hotel and Spa after a long drive back from Hilton Head, SC. Since we didn't feel like going too far we decided to give Brabo a try since it's in the hotel.
The good: The lobster ravioli and seared scallops appetizers were delicious, as was the braised pork shank and the filet.
The bad: We ordered one bottle of wine (a 2007 Napa Cab) and were brought a different vintage. When we mentioned it to the waiter, he apologized and said they'd take care of us and would have the sommelier come to our table.
He eventually did but in our opinion seemed a bit put off. We ordered a different bottle at his suggestion and figured we’d at least be charged the amount of the first bottle since we were told we would be taken care of. We weren't; However, after we brought it up, the price was later adjusted.
Michael our waiter was friendly but almost intrusive.
At one point he asked me and my partner if we were "friends" -- we replied no. He then asked if we were "sisters." We said no, and that we were a couple. We were a bit annoyed and wondered why he was asking. Perhaps making conversation, but I'm curious if he asked the man and woman sitting next to us if they were brother and sister or friends. Perhaps but I doubt it.
We just wanted to have a relaxing dinner after a long drive at a nice restaurant and it turned out to be anything but.
Was it horrible? No. Was it great? No. We left feeling like we'd not want to return.
I did email the restaurant manager Sean about our experience (mostly about the sommelier David) and his response was disappointing -- he apologized but seemed a bit defensive and pretty much took the side of his wine manager. He did invite us back.
However, the Restaurant GM did follow up with a much nicer letter and offered us a complimentary dinner should we decide to return.
Bottom line: Food was very good. But the wine manager and nosy waiter made our experience not so great.
There are several good restaurants in Alexandria with not such a hefty price tag--you may want to check them out first.
