My sister had just arrived in town and I knew what she would want for her first meal - full bellied fried clams, not available where she lives, but a childhood favorite of us both from New England. Our usual place wasn't going to work out so I googled and found Hank's (the Alexandria one). What a find. The place is tiny and easy to walk right on by. And it gets full, especially for its oyster happy hour (select varieties for $1 per and terrific). But from the great craft beer to start, the oysters and the fried clams, the meal was great. The waiter helpfully suggested ordering two appetizer portions then sides separately, for about the same price as the dinners but with better choices than fries and slaw. It was busy and noisy but it's that kind of place. Not romantic dining when I was there but just great seafood.

We've been to Hank's in the past for a drink and an appetizer and enjoyed the experience. We should have left it that way!

Thank goodness we were with friends because at least the company was good. This was a horrible dining experience.

You pick the most egregious:

* Dirty martini without the dirty.
* 2nd martini room temp.
* Busboy who pours more water on the table than in the glass and only cleaned it up when asked.
* waiter and bartender who argued loudly that the wine poured was the right one. When it definitely was not the same as the previously ordered glass (different taste, different color, etc). Thw waiter then proceeded to argue with us!
* food brought out at different times so that we had to make a decision to start before everyone served or eat it cold.
* seated below a dripping hvac vent that they knew about in advance.
* warm key lime pie.
* no skim milk for the coffee.
* don't worry about the skim milk - the coffee was so old and so bitter that nothing would have improved it.

Food was ok, but recommend you stay away. It was not a pleasant experience and certainly not at the price we paid!

Being born and raised in New England I'm very picky about my seafood. So it was with skepticism that I ordered the fried clams the waiter recommended. They were awesome - breaded and fried just right and tasted like Ipswitch Mass. Also tried the lobster roll with the specially made bread - delicious again! Our friends tried the clam bisque and couldn't get enough! They have other items beyond seafood but why bother? If you want good service, a comfortable casual atmosphere and great food check out Hank's!

Hank's is a fixture in Old Town, a dining destination 5 miles out of D.C. Short on seating, the King Street location makes it really easy to get to, taking either the Blue or Yellow Metro line to the King Street Metro Station, and then hopping on the free King Street Trolley, operated by the Alexandria DASH transit system. If you're there at 5:30 p.m. you'll get in. Once in, try the oysters in any configuration. Staff knows the sources for the day's offering, and locals know this from that. I love their small plate fried oysters, their lobster roll, and their bar.

4 of us split almost everything we ordered, which was a LOT! Started with 6 types of oysters on the half-shell, most of which were wonderful. Everyone had a different "least favorite" so it comes down to palate. They allow substitutions of the sides for a $2 surcharge; with so many good-sounding items to choose from, we made lots of subs. We tried the oysters, fried Ipswich clams, steamed mussels, lobster roll, tuna carpaccio, roasted cauliflower with shallots, onion rings, sautéed farro and kale, collards, watermelon salad (feta/olives/arugula added), peach cobbler, various cocktails and beer. The standouts were the oysters, mussels, lobster, faro, and collards. That's an amazing number of standouts for one dinner! However, the Blackberry Fizz cocktail was so bad I didn't have but 2 swallows. The onion rings were anemically white and bland. The crust on the cobbler was horrible - pasty and grainy. We picked it off of the delicious, but too little, filling. I would definitely return, especially to score the raw oysters at Happy Hour. Paying less than half price for them would be great! Most of the entrée-sized items were in the high $20s. And $2.50 each for the oysters was a ridiculous price - even though the oysters were delish. It would have been nice to have a platter priced at a lesser point. (We would have ordered more.)
