“Great location and looking better than ever since the renovation”
Reviewed August 24, 2010

My husband and I stayed in this Hampton Inn one weekend this summer when we returned home from vacation and discovered our air conditioner was broken. The hotel had a great rate, free parking and we knew it was a reliable place, since had used it as one of our room blocks for our wedding in 2007. What we didn't realize was how nice it was since they had completed the renovations!

Our room was not in the new part of the hotel, but it was still nice. It had two beds, whose only complaint I would have is that they were full size, not queen, which made sleeping a little squishy. Our room also had a (empty) mini-fridge and a microwave, which were very nice to have. The bathroom and closet were literally the size of our entire apartment - both very large.

The breakfast area is huge, with plenty of seating, although the breakfast is the same as the usual Hampton breakfast. The "Grab and Go" breakfast bags did come in handy Monday morning though! We didn't use the shuttle, since we live locally, but heard others commenting on it in a positive manner. My husband used the fitness center once, which he described as very nice for a hotel.

We just returned from the Hampton Inn after a three night stay to return my daughter to college. We are in Washington several times a year and have managed to stay in a different hotel every time we visit. We chose this hotel due to a desire to be near Old Town due to the restaurant choices, as well as having a great place to walk around in the evenings. This is the third hotel we have tried in the Old Town area. We stayed at the Hilton on King Street and the Lorien on two prior trips. We obtained a decent room rate through the hotel website with a golf course view. Worth the slight increase in price since the course is quite pretty and the other choice is to face a highway.

Pros: There are many positives about this site, including free shuttle service to the Metro and Old Town by two of the nicest drivers (Peter and James), free parking (awesome!), free internet access and the usual Hampton Inn breakfast included in the room rate. Decent insulation between rooms reduces noise spillover from the neighboring rooms. There is a microwave and small refrigerator in each room without the pretentious snack key charges for the five dollar candy bar. Hotel front desk staff are very pleasant and the room was cleaned and straightened every morning more quickly than at any other hotel I have stayed in within the last several years.

Cons: The rooms are large, but our particular room (can't speak for others) was starting to show its age with some stains in the carpet, broken ironing board, walls in the bathroom near the toilet that could use a good cleaning. I have back problems and the mattress is really soft and the four tiny pillows are too soft (even the alleged 'firm' pillows) and were lost on a king-sized bed. The air conditioner was working, but seemed unable to cool the room sufficiently even after the temperature dropped outside and the fan is quite loud. There are no restaurants or shops within walking distance of the hotel, therefore the use of the shuttle or a car is an absolute necessity. I missed being able to just walk out of the hotel to purchase a Washington Post or an iced coffee or take a stroll in the morning.

We chose the site based on our love for Alexandria and hotel pricing, but our lack of knowledge about the rush hour traffic patterns traveling in and out of the district to my daughter's college was not worth the cost savings. On Wednesday and Thursday evening it took us 90 minutes to drive 9 miles. Route 1 is a nightmare between Crystal City and interstate 95. I use the term evening 'rush hour' loosely since it seemed to encompass 6:30 - 11:00 AM and 3:30 - 7:30 PM. I drove the same route in 22 minutes at 10:00 PM. This is August and the city was relatively quiet except for tourists - I cannot imagine how long this trip takes during the rest of the year. Unfortunately we needed the use of the car during the day or trust me, we would NEVER have taken it out of the hotel parking lot and simply used the Metro. This is an excellent site if you want a basic, decent room with many extras that would otherwise generate separate charges. Definitely a great value for families and a well managed property.

We spent 3 nights here. Room was very comfortable with 2 double beds. Free wifi. Very nice continental breakfast with eggs, potatoes, waffles, cereal, donuts, muffins, juice and coffee. One reason we selected this hotel was from previous reviews about the shuttle service. All you have to do is ask for the shuttle to take you to either the Metro or Old Town Alexandria and they are right there. We took the shuttle to the Metro and then took the Metro into DC. When we returned all we had to do is call then and they were there within minutes. The same is true for the trip into Alexandria. Would definitely do this hotel again. Note The best rate was purchased thru Expedia not directly with the hotel.

Having grew up in DC and being aware of the hassle of driving and parking I wanted to stay at a place where we would not have to worry about those things. So if you want to fly in and fly out of DC this is definetly the way to go.

Fisrt, we flew into Reagan Airport around 3 in the afternoon, called the hotel and within 15 minutes we were picked up. Each day we caught the hotel shuttle to either the Metro (once you figure its the best way to get around) or to Old Town Alexandria. So we would sightsee during the day and come back to dine in Old Town. The longest we waited for the hotel shuttle was 10 minutes. Very Nice.

The other outstanding thing about this hotel is the free buffett breakfast which helped because we didn't have to leave the hotel and could leave on our adventures with a full belly. Traveling with teenagers this was a great help, and my wife appreciated the fresh cut fruit (not canned) I appreciated the coffee bar which was opened 24 hours.

We got the suite designed for persons with disablities and appreciated the extra space and location near the elevator. We have a special needs 16 year-old son and these things such as mobility, food and space made the trip enjoyable.

The hotel also has a pool, guest laundry and business center all of which we were able to use to make our stay more pleasant.

This is a wonderful place to stay - the rooms were great for our family of 3 but could easily accommodate another child or adult. Breakfast was wonderful - Krispy Kreme donuts, bagels, english muffins, eggs, waffles made on a waffle iron, fruit, juices, cereal, coffee. Shuttle service was wonderful - you just asked to be taken to the metro or Old Town and within minutes (sometimes right away) you were taken. The front desk was very helpful in giving restaurant recommendations and the driver dropped you off and picked you up when you were done right in front of the restaurant. Stay here and you won't be disappointed! Also Free parking!!!!

Like most people we stayed here to do some sight seeing in D.C.
The rooms are large, comfortable, good air conditioning, and clean.
We used the free shuttle to the metro, and it was smooth and easy. (don't throw away any unused metro cards, but donate them to the vets box in the lobby of the hotel)
Though it is a little far from restaurants, we used our car to go to them. We could have used the shuttle into old town, but preferred the reflexability of using our own car. Parking around old town is expensive, and meters are only 2 hours, but we found a nice restaurant outside the 'main drag'--Faccia Luna for supper, and it was excellent. (free street parking)
As has been said, the breakfast is very nice here. A wide selection of things.
Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Very clean hotel! Incredibly helpful staff - each person was extremely friendly. My 72 year old mother became ill while we were there, and the staff did all they could to meet her needs. Loved the free shuttle to Old Town and the Metro! Good breakfast. Easy to access. Free parking. Great bargain for the DC area! We would definitely staff there again.
