“What not to do”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2011

We thought the innkeepers hovered over us whenever we were in the public areas.
We thought the food was stingy. China and silver do not make up for poor food.
Our innkeeper did get us theatre tickets and then charged us the 12% food and lodging tax on the tickets, which would not have happened had we bought directly from the Barter Theater, which we did for 2 more shows.
The grounds and the rooms are beautiful, but that did not make up for the negative aspects of the B & B experience.

Room Tip: Our room was small and over furnished. There was no place to put anything.

I remember these guests and was under the impression that their stay was enjoyable. that is what they told us when they left.
I don't understand the term "hovering". We always make it a point to spend time chatting with guests in the mornings over coffee or in the afternoon when they're having wine or other beverages. Our guests appreciate access to the innkeepers, as they gain insight into restaurants and places to visit. Guests are very aware that this is not always the case in B&B's.
As to "stingy food," we do not serve an"all you can eat buffet". We serve a sit-down breakfast in the formal dining room, as noted on our website. I suppose if you had an extraordinary appetite, anything less than a buffet would be considered "stingy".
Barter Theatre gives all lodging facilities a fixed price & if one goes on-line to buy tickets the fee is higher because of a preservation fee and service charge per ticket.
These particular guests were traveling with another couple and wanted to see an additional show. I told them it would be less money to buy the additional tickets at the box office because it was a morning show (10:30 am) geared to students and the cost would be $11/ticket. If we bought the tickets they would have been $27/ticket because morning shows are on a different theatre package. These guests were delighted when I gave them this information. So their comment about ticket prices is very confusing to me.
They stayed in our least expensive room at $159/night. It can be viewed on line and has 2 wing chairs, a queen size bed, 2 night stands, a luggage rack, a window seat for additional luggage, a closet with four shelves and an in-room private bath. Amenities included cookies, Hershey Kisses, complimentary wine, unlimited soft drinks, bottled water and juices of which they chose to help themselves when they left. Also included in the rate is a full sit-down breakfast. We also extended these guests an "early check-in" option of 1 pm.
Even though I am well aware of human nature.......I'm always saddened when we cannot please everyone!

We enjoyed a wonderful weekend at the White Birches Inn. The inn is beautiful, very comfortable and because it is within the historic district it is in walking distance to downtown and The Barter Theater. Our hosts, Michael and Paulette, were so friendly and made us feel welcome and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious both mornings. A wonderful escape!

My wife and I made a last minute decision to go to the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Va. After reading the reviews of The White Birches Inn, we decided to make a reservation. Our particular theatre performance started at 2:00 p.m. and knowing this, the innkeeper suggested an early checkin time. This allowed us to leave Asheville at a normal time of day, get checked in, freshen up and make it to the theatre by our matinee show time. Our check in was quick, professional and the welcome we received was warm and inviting. We found the inn to be first class without the snooty atmosphere that many inns of this caliber display. Not only were the Innkeepers warn, friendly and "Genuine" people, the inn was extremely clean, the decor was very well done and the breakfast was supurb.
I highly recommend this inn to anyone looking to get away. We had a wonderful time and we will return.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are were nicely decorated and spotless. Any choice is a good one.

Wonderful place, gorgeous and comfortable rooms, friendly and welcoming hosts who went above and beyond, and a great breakfast. We stopped here for one night on our road trip across the US, and I wish we could have stayed longer.

Spent 3 days in Abingdon, VA at the White Birches Inn. Beautifully appointed home with all amenities; good hospitality; comfortable rooms with wi-fi; good food and hospitality. Definitely recommend this B&B to anyone who enjoys the comforts and conviviality of a B&B.

My husband and I recently stayed at the White Birches B&B. We were met at the door by Paulette, who welcomed us in. Michael took us on a tour of the house and showed us our room. We stayed in the Porterfield Suite. The sitting area was very nice. Paulette had gotten us theater tickets so we didn't have to do that ourselves. Wine or beer was available and there was a lovely back porch to relax on. Breakfast was very good and Paulette and Michael visited with us while we ate. We had a problem with our computer and Michael worked very hard to get it fixed. Abingdon is a lovely little town with great theater and staying at the White Birches made our stay great.

i have stayed at a few inns within Abingdon and this one is hands down the best for your money. the inn keepers are very helpful in suggesting places to eat and thing to see during your stay and will even make arrangements for you to the local theater or any of the several restaurants (all great BYTW) in and around town. the inn is within walking distance to all the quaint little shops around town.

They also have a very nice porch that overlooks a private garden that is just so lovely words are hard to describe it. i spent most of my time out there sipping the complimentary wine. All in all, a wonderful place and i will always recommend my friends and family to stay here.
