“Barbque and bluegrass! Doesn't get any better”
Reviewed April 11, 2013 via mobile

Every Thursday night there is live music. Tonight, it was a youth group and their teacher from Floyd, Va. They were great and it was free! We ate great brisket, fries and cold salads while being entertained. Local beer was perfect with the kettle chips while waiting for our dinners, which were out in less than 5! Not a 5 star joint, but a great change of scenery from commercial establishments. 4 dinners, 3beers, 2 dbl plates of chips and 2 desserts for $98, all while being entertained by youth with mandolin, fiddle, bass and guitar! Plus, great exposure to the regional crafts persons and their wares! Gotta stop if driving by on 81 !!!

“Artful collection”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

A beautiful building that imitated a very modern barn in its architecture. The collected works of Southwestern Virginia artists was amazing. It is very similar to Tamarack in West Virginia, in that it showcases the high end artisan of the area. The items for sale were quite expensive, not a bargain hunter's destination, but well-worth the visit.

“A new "must see" stop for us”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

I've been hearing about Heartwood for a couple of years now - and finally got to check it out. We loved the building's unusual architecture - it looks like a barn that has been divided and opened up... very cool. Inside, there are multiple spacious, sweeping rooms full of local artisan products - and top-notch information stations throughout (with cutting-edge visuals) to show you how its all made.

The gift shop was stellar, too. In the cafe, we bought some fresh-run coffee, and then leisurely perused all the exhibits. We bought a small piece of window art for our kitchen --- and, overall, really had a nice experience. The Thursday night "BBQ & Bluegrass" event sounds like a lot of fun - we need to check that out soon.

After about an hour and a half visit, my wife and I agreed that we'll will make this a regular "must see" stop when vacationing in the Abingdon - Bristol area.

Enjoyable visit---the building was absolutely beautiful (tasteful, artistic), and the items on display were some of the best I've seen. The only down side was the pricing, which seemed very high compared to the same type of skilled work that I've seen on display in other states.

“authentic crafts and delicious food”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

This place is really interesting to see. The inside of the building is really nice and has so much art and crafts from local artists to look at. The food here is very good. They have a coffee bar/wine bar and they also have lunch/dinner food. On certain days they do a set price for a buffet of seafood and they have a Sunday brunch with gospel music. All the food, drink, etc is all from local sources. They also have bluegrass musicians from the area come and play on certain nights and it's free, but donations are accepted. It's a neat place to spend an afternoon or evening to enjoy the music, local fare, and handmade items from craftsmen in the area. The food is moderately high priced whereas the crafts and such are on the very high end of the price scale. It's worth the price for the food, but we just enjoy browsing the crafts because the price is so high. Either way it's worth a meal and a look around.
