“Quiet and Cozy and Friendly”
Reviewed March 16, 2010

I stayed at the Maxwell Manor for three nights in August of 2008 while attending the NASCAR race at Bristol Motor Speedway. The owner and her husband were delightful and incredibly warm and hospitable. They are both from the area and know everything about Abingdon and the surrounding area. The Inn is an old historic place with a great deal of character and history and it is out in the country but only a few miles from historic Abingdon, VA. The front porch is where I spent most of my time reading and in fact I changed my plans to stay at the Inn rather than go to the early race activities. Quiet, cozy and friendly and warm owners.

My boyfriend and I stayed here two nights in September of 2007. We were kind of apprehensive about staying in a B&B because neither of us had before. We're young (in our 20s) and thought it might be kind of a stuffy, unfun thing to do. We had a GREAT time! The owner -Carolyn- had just purchased the place. And what a beautiful place it is! Carolyn was such an amazing laid back person and definitely was a lot of fun and a riot. She was very helpful about things to do in the area because she had grown up there. Breakfast was amazing and the view from the porch while eating breakfast was so gorgeous. The indoor pool was an awesome addition to our stay. It was a bit cold but, we still got in and froze our butts off! We fell in love with Abingdon while we were there and we will definitely be returning and hopefully staying at Maxwell Manor the next time around.

  • Liked — The owner, Carolyn
  • Disliked — That it is so far from my home, I'd like to visit more often

We stayed here mid-October for a couple of nights - easy to find from directions by the owner who welcomed us warmly on a dark and rainy night. We were exhausted after a very long drive and would have preferred to go straight to the room to clean up rather than have the history of the house but went with the flow. We (or rather I) were very disappointed to find that the indoor pool was not working - that was the main reason we had chosen this particular B&B instead of any of the other likely choices in Abingdon as I do enjoy a swim whenever possible. We were given lots of advice on places to go, places to eat (The Tavern in Abingdon was excellent, I think it would have been very busy, hot and noisy earlier in the evening but by 7.30 ,when we had booked it had thinned out, - still can't believe how early people eat in the States) and how to enjoy the day we had in the area. Lovely big room, two of them in fact, and well functioning bathroom (could have been a mite cleaner, old sweet wrapper on the bedside table, that sort of thing, but not enough to complain about in an old house). And the big breakfasts set us up well for the day on the two mornings - particularly nice touch was that we were given insulated coffee mugs to fill and take on our journey at the end of our breakfast on the last day. If ever in the area again we would consider returning.

  • Liked — welcoming attitude of Nancy the owner
  • Disliked — fact that the pool was not working
