“Tranquility”
Reviewed August 14, 2013

We needed to escape for a long weekend and found the best possible place at River Garden. Our innkeeper, Paula, is so accommodating and friendly. She is also an amazing cook. My husband was spoiled by her nightly treats as well as her incredible breakfasts. The B&B is on a river and our room opened up to a deck facing the river with rocking chairs and an all day performance of hummingbirds. Located near the historic town of Abingdon, Mt. Rogers National Park area and the Va. Creeper Trail, we could not ask for anything more!

Room Tip: Only three room at the B&B and all are the same facing the river.

We spent two nights at this lovely B & B in July and we cannot wait to go back. From the moment we arrived, Paula and Scott made us feel right at home. Our room was beautifully-decorated, clean and comfortable. Water pressure in the shower was amazing and the rocking chairs on the deck overlooking the river were just perfect. But the real stars of this place are the hosts. Paula's breakfasts were divine (she even picked fresh berries to top our steel-cut oatmeal!) We felt like we were staying with old friends! You will not regret your decision to stay at this delightful home!

Room Tip: All three rooms are beautiful. We stayed in the Trailrider Room, which was very comfortable.

The River Garden is so homey. The whole house has a natural, earthy feel to it. The common areas include a dining area (indoor & out), sitting area with cozy chairs, media room with large screen and lots of movies to choose from, pool table, and exercise room. There is also a hottub and a large trampoline (for the adventurous). Outside the rooms, there is a large covered deck looking out on the river. We stayed in The Barter room. The bed was very cozy and comfortable; the bathroom was very roomy, and everything was very clean. The inn is much more contemporary than all of the other inns in the area, which was very appealing to us. We were looking for something less floral & lace and more natural & up-to-date. River Garden fit our aesthetic wants perfectly. What makes River Garden so great, though, is Paula. The first time we spoke to her it was like we were old friends. She makes you feel so comfortable & welcome. Not only does she have a sweet personality, but she can bake some great sweets too! Blueberry pound cake and chocolate chip cranberry cookies were waiting when we arrived. The breakfasts were delicious, and Paula makes sure everyone is happy with their food. I would stay here over and over again!

We just stayed there and our room was very comfortable with beautiful view of the creek. The atmosphere is very warm and inviting. I don't think we could have asked for more. When we return to finish the creeper trail we intend to return here. Our hostess is a fantastic cook the three mornings we were stuffed to the hilt.

4+ Really enjoyed a two night stay here when visiting Abingdon. Would highly recommend this B&B to everyone. Paula made you feel very welcome and is a terrific baker, she had cookies, pie available in the afternoon and her breakfasts were sumptuous. We weren't looking for lunch anytime soon. We enjoyed the Barter Theatre, only a 15-20 minute drive. Well worth staying in these peaceful surroundings. Every amenity is available, loved sitting in the music room among the trees, watching the river. Will return here!

From the moment we were greeted at the door of the River Garden B&B, we knew that we were going to enjoy our stay. Paula, our host, made us feel like we were old friends coming back for a visit. All of the cozy bedrooms have doors leading out to the porch where you can sit and enjoy the scenic beauty of the North Fork of the Holsten River. Breakfast each morning was delicious and Paula never missed an afternoon without a special surprise sweet. The River Garden B&B is a "must stay" if you are visiting the city of Abingdon, VA.

We've stayed here twice and really love it. Paula was a very attentive, down-to-earth host, and we loved being on the river feeling like we were in the middle of nowhere. The breakfast was delicious, and we loved the homemade afternoon cookies. The bed was very comfortable and I loved the duvet so much I found one like it for my bad at home!
