My wife and I spent the New Years weekend at the Martha Washington Inn after it was suggested by a friend. Our friend had spent a weekend there in the fall and raved about her stay. We made our reservations in early November to insure that we could make the holiday weekend. Due to bad experiences with other small inns in the past, I emailed prior to Christmas to confirm our reservation and called 3 days before. When I called, my inquiry was handled courteously by a young lady whose smile I could almost hear.

Once we arrived, it was obvious that our friend was correct. We love attentive and professional service but prefer not to be smothered. The room was all that we had hoped for and the spa was divine. Our New Year's Eve dinner in The Dining Room was as good as we have had. The greatest surprise was dinner on our second night. We preferred a low key meal so we sat at the bar. Our dinner was not your typical pub fare. It was so over the top that my wife did not want to leave. We are excited to recommend The Martha Washington Inn to others and look forward to returning to share it with friends.

This was our 2nd time staying at this Inn, Its a nice place and was so close to home we thought no way we wanted to drive hours to celebrate the New Year and so we opted to stay here instead. Upon entering the beautiful Inn we were greeted by a not so friendly staff!! We checked into our room which was lovely, we enjoyed the comforts of it but for us, a not so friendly staff will ruin a nice stay for anyone!!! So being New Years Eve the restaurant was completely booked however we were told we could sit at the bar and enjoy our meal, and that we would be served the same choices as being seated in the restaurant area.... Once we got dressed and went down to have dinner we were seated at the bar handed a sandwich/salad---bar menu to make our selections from...The bartender that had previously spoke with us regarding dinner had completely lied to us!!!! A not welcoming atmosphere for sure!!
I don't recommend this stay to anyone unless the owners go in and fire the staff that are working there and rehire new staff!!! My husband and I are both travel nurses,,, if we gave bad service to our patients we'd be fired and so we therefore go above and beyond for our patients and expect the same when we are paying so much to have a great night with no spoilings....
Let me just add here........The House on Main-- did take us on short notice for dinner reservations,,,we were served a terrific meal and greeted by very professional friendly staff!!! I will definitely visit there again for dinner.......However I will never waste my time at the Martha Washington Inn ever again!!!!

My wife and I celebrated a belated 25th anniversary staying at the Martha for the weekend and taking in a show at the Barter. It has all the things you would expect from a stately, historic inn- heavy architectural detail, top drawer furnishings (very comfy beds)and expansive rooms both public and private. Restoration and remodeling throughout have stayed true to the period and maintained the charm without making you suffer inconvenience for charms' sake. A number of true suprises: the level of quality of the spa and fitness center, all top drawer equipment, well stocked with towels, headphones and bottled water. The salt water outdoor hot tub- terrific garden setting and smells like the ocean rather than chlorine. The biggest and most refreshing suprise of all? Unlike everywhere else I've stayed they don't seize the opportunity to gouge you at every turn. (Everyone should experience the exhiliration of being too late to tell your son NOT to open the 2 bottled waters for $7 each at the Mark in SanFrancsico) Bottled water a laughable 50cents, soft drinks $1.00.
Regretably we passed on having dinner there because of the overwhelmingly negative reviews but decided for convenience to have breakfast there. In a word, fabulous. Biggest suprise of all was that we later found it was included with the room. Suddenly our room rate went from fair to a bargain. I'm guessing they've read the reviews and responded in kind to them? Next time back we'll stay for dinner.

We really enjoyed our stay at this beautiful inn and look forward to going back. There were a couple very special extras offered by The Martha. Afternoon tea is delicious, complete with scones and truffles. Our girls felt like princesses! In the morning, breakfast is provided. This is no cheap buffet. It was a wonderful breakfast. Our children were welcomed by the staff. There is so much history in this building and every room was fun to explore. Every corner of the grounds around the building is landscaped beautifully. We enjoyed the indoor pool and the outdoor hot tub and pool. It is worth the extra money for a very special vacation.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two nights at the Martha. We were touring the Blue Ridge Parkway from North Carolina through Virginia. This our third stay and we always request the same room which had been redecorated with fine furnishings and comfortable bedding. We also attended a wonderful and funny play at the Barter Theater which really adds to the whole experience. The staff are so accommodating and attend to your every need. We took advantage of the pool and the outdoor hot tub as well as enjoying wonderful meals in the dining room (the grits are the best I have ever tasted. We plan to come back again next year and many more to come.

We had the pleasure of spending a night at the Martha Washington Inn this month. The history of Inn and town was endearing. We stayed on the 3rd floor in a suite that was very roomy with ample views of "main street". We walked to the Pub a few blocks up the street for dinner- the original structure built in 1776! We felt like we had traveled back in time. The inn provided an outstanding breakfast in a cozy dining room. The gym faciltiy was great, overlooking the back courtyard with a gas fireplace and outdoor heated spa. The pool was beautiful as well. We didn't have time to enjoy the spa, but the facitlities looked top notch. We enjoyed a glass of wine on the large front porch. They also had a well stocked library to spend time in, fireplace going, sherry in the evening. We really enjoyed or stay.

The Martha Washington has been around for a very long time; its history is detailed in the lobby. However, everything in this hotel is state of the art. The gym and spa areas, which have been recently renovated, have everything you could wish for, and the service at the Inn is top-notch. We received everything we asked for, and more, quickly and with a friendly attitude. That attitude started from our first moments checking in. No lines, no hassle. We were simply greeted by a friendly professional staff who met all our needs and asked to do more.
The room had the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in, hands down. In fact, on returning from our stay, my husband and I tried to re-create that experience with a new mattress, mattress cover and down comforter. We still couldn't quite get the lush cloud-like quality of the Inn's sleeping experience. I want to go back just for the good night's rest.
In addition to the benefits the Inn offers is the absolute charm of the city of Abingdon. Almost right across from the Inn lies the world-famous Barter Theatre, which regularly presents very high-quality performances, and the city itself offers many fine restaurants, antique stores and country lanes. I'd visited the city before, but my stay was made so much better because of the fact that we were staying at the Martha Washington.
