Traveling with our two children we encountered many wonderful people eager to help us and give us tips, one was visit Abingdon and visit the Barter Theatre...how fortunate we were that we were able to get one of the lovely family rooms for our Saturday night stay, the room was large and spacious, afternoon tea was a welcome inclusion on arrival, and breakfast a nice start to the day. The room did not have coffee or tea making or a fridge, and we didn't mind this, flat screen TV and wireless internet were excellant...Aveda bath products were a nice touch.
The staff are wonderful, especially the British lady at reception who went beyond the normal to make us welcome. The hotel has a lovely pool, health center and the children enjoyed a game of tennis...The spa was excellent and surprisingly good value in my view. The Barter theatre is a MUST...my family did a standby on the night and we enjoyed a marvelous production of the Wizard of OZ all a real highlight for us!

An imposing hotel in the centre of Abingdon. We were given keys and instructions on how to find our room, but no help. It was a standard room and on the smallish side, but well furnished although there was only one armchair for the two of us. However there was a well equipped dressing room and bathroom. The air conditioning seemed to work on the "all or nothing" basis. The dining room is large and lacking in atmosphere and even in June only managed plastic flowers on the tables.

We just returned from a weekend at the Martha Washington, and it was a superb experience. The hotel and grounds were beautiful, the staff warm and friendly, service exceptional, and the food delicious. The room was quite cozy. There are some modernizations going on that enhance the charm of the rooms.

The Spa and its staff are truly a delight. Warm and friendly service.

We took advantage of a superb 2 night package offered online, including Barter Theater tickets and other features, for an anniversary stay, enjoying very good food and wonderful service.

I have stayed at the MWI over the years and it could use a facelift and the staff need to be trained in customer service. The Southern hospitality that is touted in Abingdon seems to turn to condescension here.

The spa and pool are lovely, though.

I am heading back to VA in a month and have decided that while I may use the spa, I won't stay here. There are several B&Bs that know the meaning of service, we'll be staying at one of those.

The Martha is a real gem. I stay in a lot of hotels, new and old expensive and inexpensive. I think they management of the Martha Washington is doing an outstanding job. Its a wonderful blend of old style with new modern touches.

The Martha Washington is historic, charming and, yes, maybe a little run down, but we plan to go back with enthusiasm every time there's a good play at the Barter Theater. Our room was an adequate size, except for the bathroom area which had a modern but tiny toilet/shower room and a tiny sink/vanity area. Bed was comfortable. Some upholstery had seen better times. There were no in-room movies. Staff is friendly, President's Room is a cozy bar, spa looks good (didn't use it), lovely indoor pool, new outdoor whirlpool terrace. Spa/pool area is being renovated, looks like an indoor walkway to the pool. The Barter Theater is right across the street (or next door, if theater II).

Restaurant seems to be the best in town. Menu is pretty standard, but preparation is interesting. Appetizers are so-so. Filet and fish were excellent, pork chop was a pork chop. At both breakfast and dinner, there never seemed to be enough servers. Breakfast continental buffet is more than ample, with hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit, cereals, smoked salmon, pastries. If you're a hotel guest, the buffet and a hot breakfast are included with your room. Don't get the hot breakfast unless you want to spend an extra 30 minutes waiting for it.

The Martha is becoming a favorite inn, sort of like a favorite aunt, delightful though getting older.
