Abingdon is delightful, and I could not have been happier staying at the Martha Washington. The main entrance hall is authentic and welcoming, and I felt quite privileged to be staying in this historic building.
My room was excellent, spacious and interesting. We especially enjoyed whiling away an evening on the front porch. Would love to stay here again!

My wife and I spent two nights at "The Martha" during a visit to bike the Virginia Creeper Trail. We really enjoyed our stay, finding it be extremely comfortable and relaxing. We really like old hotels, and this one is in good shape and has had many modern amenities added, such as the pool and jacuzzi. It manages to be both elegant and unstuffy at the same time. There are many porches on which to sit and read, and it is right in the center of town, close to both the Barter Theater and the start of the Creeper trail. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the pool and jacuzzi felt great after a long bike ride. My wife really enjoyed a pedicure. There were two comfortable chairs in our room, which overlooked a leafy lawn. The Martha is not perfect, but we found it to be a very nice place to stay and strongly recommend it.

A friend and I were very excited to stay at the Martha Washington, but were somewhat disappointed. The building is lovely, the staff is very nice, and the location is great, but we found it to be VERY expensive for what we got, The room was small and the in-room AC unit clicked off and on all night and kept me awake. Even with that, the room still felt damp. The free breakfast was quite minimal.

This hotel belongs in the list of Best in USA. It is an old house/college which has been renovated into a lovely hotel. The rooms are large with very comfortable beds and linens. The shower was wonderful and the free snacks and water were an unusual treat. The fitness equipment was top of the line and the huge indoor (with large windows) saltwater pool was wonderful as was the outdoor waterfall hot tub. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The continental breakfast was very nice with the option of paying for a full breakfast and the dining room was beautiful with separate enclosed tables for families or groups. The 9 to 12 PM Port was very special and the library offered a beautiful place to sip it while playing checkers. The express to the VA Creeper trail was wonderful and the rental bikes were top of the line as were the helmets. Overall this was an unexpected gem of a hotel and an incredible experience.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Garden Wing and our room was wonderful. I dont know about the other wings of the h...

For anyone that has stayed in a Manor-house hotel in Ireland or England, you'll feel that ambience as you walk into the lobby. Turn of the century furniture, oil paintings, creaky floors, etc. Service is very gracious and accommodating. Each guest is allowed a glass of port during the evening. Choose to enjoy your port out on the expansive porch - complete with cozy wicker furniture and ceiling fans to keep you cool. Very southern! The dining room has great service and even better food - I had the salmon w/ gnocchi and brocolinni (sp?) - divine! Great wine choices as well. The continental breakfast (included) is sufficient - fruit, coffee, juice, pastries, yogurt. The only complaint is that the room we had was a suite on the first floor. Very dark and dank (reason for taking off a star). There were not enough lamps or overhead lights and since we were at "garden level" we didn't have good light at all. Great for sleeping late and naps, I guess. The big bonus? The shower was huge with rainshower style shower head. I didn't want to leave the shower! The bathroom and rooms were kept very clean. And, you never saw a housekeeper. They were very discreet. The pool is lovely and they have a nice sundeck and patio with a hot-tub. Location is within walking distance to downtown and restaurants. Tip: Ask the bartender for her chocolate martini!

Room Tip: I stayed in the suite at the garden level. Big rooms and common salon - bathroom was huge. Just da...

Husband, teenaged daughter, and I spent a lovely weekend getaway at The Martha. The staff couldn't have been more hospitable, furnishings are lovely, excellent fitness center and the perfect pool. Its location is just across the street from The Barter and many nice shops and restaurants are within easy walking distance. This was a family trip but this would be perfect for a romantic getaway as well. I wouldn't recommend it for younger children...lots of stairs. We didn't eat at the hotel except for the complimentary breakfast (fruit, yogurt, banana bread and muffins) but heard from others that the food was good.
