Just got back from a 3-day stay at the Martha Washington. Beautiful hotel! Stayed here for a long weekend while hiking Mount Rogers and the surrounding parks. Hotel is right off the interstate in town, with easy access to everything. Just blocks away from downtown restaurants and shopping, no problem walking to everything.
We stayed on the first floor in the garden section. The grounds are fabulous, flowers all in bloom this time of year, and facilities were excellent. Large, indoor pool with lots of natural light, two large in ground hot tubs outside beautifully set next to koi ponds and a flowering walkway. Not a soul in the hot tubs both days we used them, and at the most there were one or two other people in the pool when we used it.
Enjoyed the porch however both times we sat out on it the bar was not serving - we had to go down to the bar to get drinks, then bring them outside, which wasn't too big of a deal. They said the kitchen was understaffed as it was Memorial Day weekend (which we thought would mean they would have more staff, but I guess not!).
We enjoyed our stay except for the air conditioning unit that kept us up with banging and clanging all night 2 of our 3 nights. I'm not sure why but it would clunk on and off randomly every 5 minutes usually around 2-3 am until about 5-6 am. We tried giving up and turning it off but then the room got too hot and muggy. The bed however was vey comfortable and we had no issues with the mattress. Bathroom was newly tiled, shower only and no tub, but very clean.
We requested a mini fridge for our room and when we got there, were informed they were all out. Apparently the hotel only has two so get one if you can! We were quite disappointed as we brought a cooler full of snacks. When we got to our room though, there was a mini fridge! So I guess we had lucked out with one of the two after all. Also to note, there is an ice bucket in the room, but to get ice you have to go to the front desk and ask for ice.
The bar and restaurant were excellent, especially considering they were basically the only thing open the whole holiday weekend. The bartender was friendly and helpful, and made the best mint juleps we've had! Hot breakfast in the restaurant was delicious, eggs, bacon, sausage, omelets, diced potatoes, sweet potato pancakes, fantastic grits, juice, coffee, tea, etc. for around $13 pp. Keurig coffee maker in room with tea and coffee options resupplied daily, and a snack basket in room with cookies, pretzels, bagged snacks (not replenished daily).
Overall an excellent stay, only con was that the town was basically shut down for Memorial Day weekend (all restaurants and shops were closed pretty much the whole time we were there). We would like to go back another time when things are open. Oh, and one last con, we had hoped to get massages on Monday (memorial day) but the spa was closed for the holiday. This is the first time I have encountered that at a hotel.
