“Beautiful stay”
Reviewed June 3, 2013

Just got back from a 3-day stay at the Martha Washington. Beautiful hotel! Stayed here for a long weekend while hiking Mount Rogers and the surrounding parks. Hotel is right off the interstate in town, with easy access to everything. Just blocks away from downtown restaurants and shopping, no problem walking to everything.

We stayed on the first floor in the garden section. The grounds are fabulous, flowers all in bloom this time of year, and facilities were excellent. Large, indoor pool with lots of natural light, two large in ground hot tubs outside beautifully set next to koi ponds and a flowering walkway. Not a soul in the hot tubs both days we used them, and at the most there were one or two other people in the pool when we used it.

Enjoyed the porch however both times we sat out on it the bar was not serving - we had to go down to the bar to get drinks, then bring them outside, which wasn't too big of a deal. They said the kitchen was understaffed as it was Memorial Day weekend (which we thought would mean they would have more staff, but I guess not!).

We enjoyed our stay except for the air conditioning unit that kept us up with banging and clanging all night 2 of our 3 nights. I'm not sure why but it would clunk on and off randomly every 5 minutes usually around 2-3 am until about 5-6 am. We tried giving up and turning it off but then the room got too hot and muggy. The bed however was vey comfortable and we had no issues with the mattress. Bathroom was newly tiled, shower only and no tub, but very clean.

We requested a mini fridge for our room and when we got there, were informed they were all out. Apparently the hotel only has two so get one if you can! We were quite disappointed as we brought a cooler full of snacks. When we got to our room though, there was a mini fridge! So I guess we had lucked out with one of the two after all. Also to note, there is an ice bucket in the room, but to get ice you have to go to the front desk and ask for ice.

The bar and restaurant were excellent, especially considering they were basically the only thing open the whole holiday weekend. The bartender was friendly and helpful, and made the best mint juleps we've had! Hot breakfast in the restaurant was delicious, eggs, bacon, sausage, omelets, diced potatoes, sweet potato pancakes, fantastic grits, juice, coffee, tea, etc. for around $13 pp. Keurig coffee maker in room with tea and coffee options resupplied daily, and a snack basket in room with cookies, pretzels, bagged snacks (not replenished daily).

Overall an excellent stay, only con was that the town was basically shut down for Memorial Day weekend (all restaurants and shops were closed pretty much the whole time we were there). We would like to go back another time when things are open. Oh, and one last con, we had hoped to get massages on Monday (memorial day) but the spa was closed for the holiday. This is the first time I have encountered that at a hotel.

Having never traveled to Abingdon, Virginia, I have to say that my trip to this fascinating small Virginia town was made even more enjoyable with my stay at The Martha Washington Hotel and Spa. From its central location to the actual hotel and the amenities provided, I give both thumbs up to this lodging establishment. And, there's nothing like sitting on the front porch, watching time slip by and the sun set. My only regret was not having room 437, which can sometimes bring the sound of a violin playing at night ... now, you've got to stay here to find out the rest of the story(ies).

Just driving up to the Martha Washington it already exceeded expectations. Charming porch full of wicker furniture, beautiful lobby, warm greetings, helpful knowledgeable staff. Furnishings and art work were an absolutely charming blend of old and new. Our room was huge!! Gorgeous wood flooring with a Persian rug. The writing desk had interesting magazines, a pile of novels and complimentary snacks Kuerig coffee maker with a nice selection. Huge bathroom with high end finishes, walk-in shower , double sinks built into huge antique dresser. The grounds were beautiful with charming touches everywhere you looked. Dinner was fantastic..our server Kari was very knowledgeable and efficient, warm and friendly You really got the sense everybody loved their work. Complimentary port in the library...yum and please do this. Take the drink and go to that wonderful room. The art , books and collectibles are really worth taking the time to look at. Really nice continental breakfast. The Martha never missed the chance to impress. Wish we had stayed long enough to take advantage of the spa facilities. Do yourself a favour... Go here

We stayed at the Martha for our 10th anniversary. The hotel was amazing and the staff was very helpful! Ms. Bettie was our room attendant and took care of our every need. I would recommend it to anyone! With that said....I would not recomment the Sister's restaurant at the hotel. The food was overpriced and the service stunk. There are plenty of wonderful places within walking distance from the hotel to eat!

Room Tip: Make sure to get some port wine at the front desk between 8pm and midnight.....

My husband & I spent the weekend at the Martha for his birthday. We were fortunate enough to be given a Junior Suite which was FANTASTIC and a great surprise. The rooms were so beautifully decorated, we felt like we were staying in a friend's flawless home. Water bottles and snacks are provided for you in the room as well. Nik greeted us and offered us his assistance upon our arrival, and Amelia checked us in warmly. We appreciated their hospitality, and all of the staff we encountered were excellent as well. The bedtime port was such a great treat after coming home from dinner. Make sure to check out the library, which is right beside the lobby. The pool & hottub were perfect after coming home from a day on the Virginia Creeper trail, and for morning dips before brunch. The front porch also has super comfortable chairs and couches to relax and enjoy the view or a drink. We did the complimentary breakfast one morning, which was definitely enough food (fruit, pastries, coffee, yogurt) and the brunch at Sisters restaurant one morning. You can walk everywhere in downtown Abingdon from the Martha. We left our car in the parking lot from Friday until we had to leave on Sunday. Overall a perfect experience at the Martha and we will definitely return in the future.

This was my first time in Abingdon, and I can't imagine going there without staying at the Martha. The property is beautiful and makes you want to explore and learn more about its history. Such a gem for a quaint little town.

I usually love a modern hotel, but am happy to stay in a historical place as long as it is clean and renovated, which the Martha is without a doubt. My room was very clean and the bedding's were soft and comfortable. The bathroom was very updated--just a little small. Although it wasn't a bother to me, the room had no desk or space good for working on a computer which may be essential for some business travelers.

The food and service throughout the conference, which was held at the Martha, was very good. Above average compared to many similar conferences I've recently attended. The continental breakfast consists of fruit, yogurt, a few baked goods, and coffee/orange juice (which is perfectly enough for me).

I am already thinking about returning to the Martha for a mother-daughter weekend in the near future. The spa looked spectacular, just a little pricey. And I would love to catch a show at the Barter Theatre, which is just across the street.

A great two night stay!

I have to say this was a fabulous location. We spent the weekend in a Junior Sweet and loved all the space to sit around and relax. The pool was just the right temperature, the hot tubs were so relaxing and the staff was #1.

Room Tip: The fourth floor does not have elevator access so plan accordingly
