Owner description: Alta turns 70 next winter. Alta's place in the ski world is unique, its history storied. Alta's culture blends this past with the future as it presents, along with Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort, America's first lift-served interconnect. Alta and pure, unspoiled skiing are synonymous. Alta's wide variety of terrain, breathtaking alpine scenery and superb snow conditions combine to create a unique setting. Alta continues to offer a ski-only experience.

The go to place for out of towners. We suggest Snow Basin for less lines and good skiing. We went with friends and was shocked at the crowds, unhappy impatient people and the parking .

Liked: no snowboarders, fantastic powder, which you need to work for.
Disliked : so far from Australia! Joking!

Terrain. Snow. Vibe. People dwell on the no snowboarding but its more than that. Alta in my opinion is more laid back than it's neighbor, Snowbird. There's terrain for everyone. Beginners stick with the Albion and Cecret lifts. Collins gets you up quick to the most varied terrain including the choices along the High Rustler traverse. Traverse until you find a place to drop in or cut over into East Greeley for more solitude. Speaking of Solitude, the traverse up and out to Catherine's Area opens up more glades and a few chutes. More chutes and steeps can be found off Supreme. Checkout the gnarly lines in Supreme Bowl while going up the chairlift. Best plan for a powder day is follow the bombs. Due to a number of avalanche slopes in bounds a number of areas and gates are closed right after a big storm. Ski patrol will slowly work the mountain and open each area as conditions allow. So if you hear avy bombs going off, it's probably a good bet that area is about to be opened. Also a good bet to stop at a gate if you see people lining up. Chances are you have a ropedrop coming and powder to be had. Lastly, some areas like Devil's Castle, East Castle, and Baldy may even open a few days later which leaves fresh pow days after a storm. Wildcat has some nice stashes in it also. So much to explore!

And for those that haven't been in a while, they added bars to their chairlifts over the past few years for those traveling with young children.

Our first time skiing out west and we were not disappointed. Utah pow is unbelievable. With fresh snow on the ground and tons of wide open space to create your own runs, Alta is heaven. From gorgeous wide-open groomers to glades and runs that give you that "off piste" experience, you can find it all. Skiers only, which you probably knew before reading this, but it doesnt hurt to give a reminder.
