Owner description: Alta turns 70 next winter. Alta's place in the ski world is unique, its history storied. Alta's culture blends this past with the future as it presents, along with Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort, America's first lift-served interconnect. Alta and pure, unspoiled skiing are synonymous. Alta's wide variety of terrain, breathtaking alpine scenery and superb snow conditions combine to create a unique setting. Alta continues to offer a ski-only experience.

Skiing is great, especially is you don't mind a little traversing and stepping. There are plenty of great runs that you may never have to step up, but it is likely your curiosity will overcome you and it will be rewarded.

Great resort with that "old time" feeling. If you want glitz, don't come here. If you want the best snow the West has to offer...belly up to the chair!

That's how serious skiing started for me, and many of my friends - by looking what Alta locals do, and trying to imitate it. You'd be hard pressed to find another ski resorts that has it all in such quality - the powder, the cliffs, the hike-to terrain, the trees, the vibe, the super-convenient location.
If you don't find it at the very top of what skiing can be, learn some more, and come back. Eventually, you will get it, I promise.
It is easy to forgive steeply rising (though still moderate) lift ticket prices, rather mediocre, overpriced food, often long lift lines -- if you remember your first 27-inch powder day, your first hike on a razor-thin ridge, your first 55-degree tree run, your first jump - and all these memories are from the same, one and only, Alta.

best powder in the US. there are a multitude of resorts and lifts in the area. 25 minutes from the Salt lake airport and 15 minutes from the city.

We spend a week at the fantastic Grand America hotel in Salt Lake City and drove each day to Alta for skiing. The drive is only 40 minutes so not bad and by staying in SLC we had a much more robust selection of activities for the evening as well as a great hotel. But enough about that, this review should be for skiing and Alta is great. I have limited resort experience in USA, only Telluride and Alta. The latter is more scenic although Alta is still beautiful. But where Alta wins is the powder, the groom trails, the friendliness and the excellent instructors my wife met as she learned to ski.

The ski shop was convenient and moderately priced.

Please note, no night skiing.

We loved it!
