“Right in the mountains”
Reviewed April 15, 2012

This lodge gives you the real "mountain feeling" - it is right on the slopes and has a mountaing lodge and not a motel feeling. The rooms are not luxurious, but everything necessary is there.
Food is quite good, and the hotel has a cool bar.

Charming plain hotel with London or New York prices.
Great staff and wholesome food. Great coffee. But the 1980s vibe is poorly matched with up to the minute prices

Just leaving our Alta vacation. Upon arrival our room was warm, within two hours had reached 90! We made front desk aware and after an unsuccessful visit from maintenance they moved us to a room without direct midday sunlight. We still had an amazing view. We actually kept the windows open the majority of the time so the room would be comfortable. Overall, no complaints as the management and staff accommodated us very quickly.

The location for ski rentals was great, and the lockers provided for each room in the lodge was ideal.

The food was wonderful. Dinner was healthy and very filling, offering three different options every evening.

Just to note, no television and although wifi is free, it is not fast enough to stream movies in your room.

Overall it was a great, relaxing ski get away.

This is a great place to go if you are focused on skiing and hanging out with family. The food and rooms certainly take a back seat but that is not their focus. Everyone is helpful and it seems like they really enjoy their work. We had a great time!

I am sitting in the SLC airport reflecting on my Alta Lodge experience, and felt compelled to share my appreciation for this amazing institution. I travel 50+ nights a year for business, and often stay in very nice hotels. Never have I found the character, "feel" and warmth of the Alta Lodge. It is the perfect skiing experience - right at the base of the mountain, but that's not what jumps out - it's the culture there.

Their staff is so friendly, helpful and on top of things, it's really refreshing. I love the way the culture includes interacting with the other people staying there, catching up at the bar after a long day of skiing and the great food included with the room. I really enjoyed the communal dining last night. We sat with a family from Texas and a fellow from Australia, while other nights we just got our own table.

If you are looking for pure luxury, like a pillow menu and flat screens in your room, this isn't for you. But if you want to dial it back for your vacation, take a deep breath and feel something authentic, try this place. It's magical.

This is for real skiers, great food, amazing people.

Room Tip: The older rooms are small and charming...newer wing is more spacious, but not as cozy

Alta is a ski lodge at a mountain where all the action is skiing. No snowboarding, no full-service spas (though they offer massage), no night life, no fast food. They often book a year in advance, and almost everyone comes back (We've been more than 15 times). They book your shuttle from and to the airport, cheerfully carry your bags and equipment down and up three flights of stairs, and check you in promptly. As I said, this is a ski lodge, not a resort, and your room has all you need--good bed(s), bath amenities, hot shower/tub, plenty of hangers, towels, etc., and boot warmers. But not Italian high-thread count sheets (the sheets are fine, though) nor super-light down quilts (the quilts are warm, though). Half the rooms have a view of the mountain--worth the price. The prices, btw, are really excellent. They look high until you see what you get: full breakfast and full dinner included, and what gorgeous meals they are! Three choices every dinner: meat, fish, or veggie. (When we were there, prime rib, veal, lamb, venison; mahi mahi, salmon, ono, trout; roasted veggie ravioli with walnut sauce) Breakfast has anything you could want, including made-to-order eggs and buffet items that are so delicious you can ski for hours afterwards with no hunger pangs. Lunch you pay for (or charge to your room), and it's excellent too. Cookies, cakes, coffee and tea from 3-5 for weary skiers. Then the hot tubs for sore muscles. All ages welcomed at the lodge, plenty of gray heads, plenty of young romantic couples, plenty of families with kids. The kid program is to die for: read about it. At the Deep Powder House, we have rented top-notch skis and boots. Lift tickets for a 5-day pass: $58/day. Can't find that anywhere else, for a mountain that is probably the best ski area in America.
Finally, the staff. I can't say enough about them, from the front desk to the servers to the dining room manager (who's already had a shout-out here, Gregg), to the owners and managers, Mimi and Marcus and George, to the young adults who keep the place running smoothly. Book early, have fun, and join the rest of us who go back year after year.

Room Tip: Rooms that face the slopes are worth the extra price. We had rooms recently that I can report on dir...
