“I ran away from home and this is where I went!”
Reviewed April 16, 2011

Whether traveling alone or with extended family and friends, the Alta Lodge is a throw back to another era of ski lodging. The rooms are comfortable with gorgeous mountain views and without TVs. Breakfast and dinner are included in the room price and are an integral part of the lodge experience as guests return year after year and reacquaint themselves over meals. (I have been a guest for over 40 years!) No skiing glitz here....serious skiing, great food and quiet evenings.

Room Tip: Travel late in the season

The Alta Lodge is a warm, friendly, comfortable, and classy place to stay when you want to ski one of the great mountains of the world. Having been in business (and owned by the same family) since 1939, a great thread of tradition underlies all aspects of the guest experience, but nothing feels old or stilted. The management has remained committed to upgrading and modernizing the facilities, but in a thoughtful manner that does not run roughshod over the wonderful sense of ski history that is part of Alta.

Anybody going to Alta should know that there is no "nightlife" scene; Alta is for skiers, and for people who can enjoy relaxing apres ski with a few friends and meeting some new friends. I've returned to the Alta Lodge many times, and I always find the other guests to be interesting, friendly, and courteous. This ambiance is enhanced by the great food and "can do" attitude of the lodge staff, who are clearly trained to be of service to the guests in a manner that makes you feel like you're being welcomed into their home.

The amenities of the lodge in addition to the great food include indoor hot tubs (co-ed), saunas (not co-ed), well-appointed rooms with views of beautiful Little Cottonwood Canyon, and extremely easy access to skiing. You can buy your lift ticket at the front desk, take your skis from your private locker, walk outside, and ski right on to the lift. You can easily return to your room during the day to change clothing, or grab an excellent lunch in the dining room before heading back out to the mountain (don't miss the Alta Special Sandwich, a great mix of turkey, brie, and bacon).

You should note that the Alta Lodge adds 15% to your bill in leiu of tipping, so include that in you calculation of the cost. The Lodge will assist you with your airport shuttle (only 45 minutes from Salt Lake airport), which makes it very easy to be on the mountain the day you arrive and get some skiing in before you have to leave. But be warned; if you're like me, the leaving part is always hard and is habitually accompanied by a plan to return to the wonderful Alta Lodge.

If you want to ski on the best snow anywhere and you want to stay where all your needs are met, this is the place to stay. Walk out of the ski locker room, and ski right down to the lifts. The staff bends over backwards to make you comfortable. You can dine alone or join a table of other guests who are having as good a time as you are. You can stay in a room in the old part of the Lodge, which reminds you of what ski lodges used to be, or stay in large, airy rooms with wonderful views. There is a sauna and a hot tub to help you unwind after a great day skiing. All this and the best bar in Alta, catering to guests and locals (ski patrol, instructors and area employees.) There is a reason why so many guests return year after year.

Skiing at Alta means a top experience no matter when you come. The snowpack is deep so even if champagne powder has not arrived there will be good skiing somewhere in this vast snow-board free area. Instruction here is simply amazing for all ski levels!

The Alta Lodge is a family-run operation and the staff is constantly going out of their way to enhance your stay. I would not consider staying anywhere else. Additionally, the food is gourmet and I'm from San Franciso so I know gourmet!

Alta Lodge is a lovely location for a wedding! Of course we visited off-season. The lodge was very nice, although there are no TVs or radios! The staff was very helpful. Brunch on Sunday was included and it was the most incredible spread I've ever seen! And it was served from 9:30 - 2:00! Loved this place!
