“Uncleanly Rooms”
Reviewed June 26, 2014

Stayed at this hotel on 6/21 in room 1102. The lobby of the hotel was great, the rooms were nice and recently renovated for such an old establishment. The next morning I was looking around the room to be sure I didn't forget anything and found under the night stand an empty green bottle (that was not mine), and under the bed was a pile of dog feces (and I didn't have a dog with me). I called the front desk to alert them of the issue as we were leaving anyway. They offered not apology or shock that such a tragic thing would happen. Other than this the hotel was nice.

Also, I asked the front desk for Advil or some type of headache medicine (I even offered to pay). They were able to offer any (first time that has EVER happened, even a Holiday Inn would give you headache medicine upon request). You'd think a hotel as nice as this one could at least provide Advil.

Unique elaborate Victorian/Queen Anne era Texas decor, plus usual quota of cowhide & horn; reeks of Texas history. Rooms are generally small & guests must negotiate a maze of elevators & corridors, but that's part of its charm. Could use more lighting in public areas & rooms. Very friendly, helpful staff.

Dear BTR1,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I love your note about the usual quota of cowhide and horn. You depicted a perfect picture of the bar. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and experienced wonderful service, as that is something we hold to a high standard. We are also working on improving the lighting as we speak. Please come and stay with us again next time your travels bring you to Austin!

Sincerely,

Joe

For my first visit to Austin, I appreciated the convenience and the history of the Driskell. We could've stayed at the newer W or Four Seasons, but the history of the Driskell was appealing as well as the rates. The rooms are a bit small and simple, but had everything we needed.

From the hotel, it was easy to access pretty much anywhere by foot. We explored U of T, the LBJ Library, Second Ave. area, Lake Austin, and South Congress area. As probably with many places in Austin, some of the guests can be loud and rowdy, stumbling home loudly in the wee hours of the morning. We were there for fun and to explore the city, so we didn't mind the disruption too much.

Room Tip: Request a floor not populated by people under the age of 32 years old?

Green Features: Didn't know they had environmentally friendly practices. If so, it was done discreetly and well.

Hello GoldenGooseLV,

Sounds like you really enjoyed your time here in Austin. It's great to also here the hotel treated you well. We are definitely unique compared to some of the other options in Austin, hopefully you were able to enjoy some of our live music that takes place at night. Next time you are in Austin you will have to enjoy the new Boardwalk that just recently opened up. It's only a few minutes away from the hotel and runs along Lady Bird Lake. Can't wait to welcome you back.

Sincerely,

Joe

Our stay at The Driskill was extended and we were treated with impeccable Texas hospitality and professionalism throughout our stay. The hotel evokes the feeling of Old Texas while being completely updated. The blend of modern conveniences with authentic antique furnishings made it comfortable and homey. Lobby is grand and gorgeous -- this would be a wonderful venue for upscale weddings and conferences. Valet service is always available, fast, courteous, and they were careful with our vehicle. Concierge services are also available around the clock and we were always greeted with friendly enthusiasm. Rather than eating in the restaurant, we recommend ordering dinner "to go" and catching a handsome cab for a twilight ride through downtown Austin. Rooms were exceptionally clean and all conveniences were right on hand. Beds are very comfortable, as is the fresh and crisp bedding. We enjoyed an evening at the piano bar challenging the pianist to play our favorites (which he not only plays from memory, but LEARNED TO PLAY by ear). So many delightful little details made this hotel an exceptional experience. Not a single thing to complain about unless you just don't care for friendly, professional service. The hotel is located right on 6th Street, which is the hub of activity in the "Live Music Capital of the World," yet we felt completely safe and relaxed.

Room Tip: All rooms have high ceilings and comparable ammenities. Noise from 6th Street was a non-issue.

Dear REdgerton,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. It sounds like you really enjoyed your time at the hotel and here in Austin. It's great to see that the team was able to handle your every need. We pride ourselves on providing luxury service without being stuffy. I love your "dinner to go" tip. During Bat season, you could even take some food to go and stake out a place to watch the bats on Congress bridge or on the grassy null below. Hopefully, you will be able to experience the Driskill once again in the near future.

Take care,

Joe

The Driskill evokes the old west and hums with action. The suite was excellent....High ceilings, big bed, good flat screens. Just a bit dark.

Staff was excellent and the visit more than interesting. If you can, stay here in Austin and feel the history of this terrific town.
