The description of a basement couln't be more accurate, as it actually is and feels like being in an unfinsihed basement. You will like this place so much that won't bother you at all! Who would think that descrption would probably be one of the best places to take a date. The bands I saw were very good, and they have a good drink menu at a good price. So reasonable I actually picked up the tab for a couple sitting at the table with us that were on their first date!

We were recommended to go to the Elephant Room while visiting our son in Austin, because I'm a fan of Jazz. Unfortunately, we weren't told that they didn't serve food there so we were hungary when we went in. We stayed for the first set and a couple of drinks but hunger drove us back out in search of food. If we'd eaten before going in, I'd have stayed there all night! The seating we good, waitress was friendly, and the music was excellent.

Basement venue on Congress. On the weekday evening we were there we heard two great jazz groups. The sound system made the listening difficult, however. Small, interesting venue felt comfortable for all ages.

I LOVE the Elephant Room! Haven't been there in a little while (no long live in Austin :-( ) but the setting is cool, the music is great, and it's in Austin. How can you go wrong? Right on the main drag, nice downtown view, near the bats :-) Worth checking out. We usually hit 6th street then "The Continental Club" and finish off a perfect evening with a Colorado Bulldog and jazz at "The Elephant Room"... aaaahhhhh. Next morning hit Magnolia Cafe for breakfast and "it's alllll good."

If you like jazz the way it should be, straight up, this is the place to be. On two nights we weren't disappointed except for a few things.
Service- all over the map; attitude galore
Seating- the place is a long rectangle with the stage on the short end
Noise- many people are stupidly oblivious and intrusive to people who are trying to listen; if you come to listen get there early esp. on busy nights
Trumpter- lots of talent, and lots of attitude. Of course, I don't know who it was but, there is no excuse for not playing your best just because youre super cool dude jazzer.. you know who are.

Acoustics are nice; vibe is good. Just pick your moves and you'll enjoy it.
