Our stay was okay, other than an air conditioner that didn't work properly and a musty smell in the room. However, we had an awesome experience with a housekeeping employee by the name of Steve. When we arrived, we weren't sure where to go, between towers, to get to our room. We ran into Steve while we were looking for our room and he went out of his way to help us. What a very kind man! Thank you for being such a hard working, helpful person, Steve!

You walk into this hotel and you feel like you've stepped back 30 years. It really needs updating. The rooms are fine, large event - but very out of date. The restaurant (which I only used for breakfast) is like a museum piece (and that includes the staff).

Although we took a cab, it's falrly easy to walk to the unique Rainy Street area of town. This was my first visit to Austin and found that experience totally unique - don't miss it.

Back to the hotel - there was ample parking and they didn't kill me - so no complaints. I think you can do better though.

Although it’s clear that we aren’t the newest hotel in Austin, it sounds as if you enjoyed your stay and our location. Our last full renovation was 4 years ago, not 30. Yes, Rainey Street is now a solid entertainment destination, just a couple of hundred yards away.

I do have to take exception of with your reference to our restaurant staff member. Joyce has been serving our guests for 36 years and is one of our most treasured employees. Of course her other job at another local restaurant keep her busy. I just hope I can maintain such pace when I gain that much experience. Not many can.

Decently priced for Location. Off the highway close to Rainey street.
Paid $100 bucks for a weds night, right before 4th of July. Front desk staff helpful. Elevators had graffiti on the door which could be easily fixed with a paint job.
Room was clean, bathroom is sorta hidden within closet. My room was on the 3rd floor and faced the parking lot and highway, somewhat noisy during the day.
Free parking and good access to main attractions in downtown austin a plus.

Thanks for the informative review. Yes we do have a great location that allows easy access to just about any area of town.

Paint is not an option for the stainless in our elevators. Unfortunately, there are guests that want to leave something behind. I’ve taken this on and will be doing some serious scratch removal in the coming days.

Come on back, there’s more holidays in the coming months.

The hotel is reasonably priced and reasonably close to the conference center. The rooms are clean, comfortable and nice, but the rest of the hotel has a dated feel to it. The staff are polite and some of the shuttle drivers are especially cool.

When you check in try to avoid staying on the side facing the freeway. The windows are single glazed and the trucks make quite a bit of noise in the mornings during rush hour. I usually run the ac for white noise to cover up the freeway, but the room can get pretty cool, if you keep it running all night.

The hotel is about a 10-15 minute walk to the conference center if you decide to walk. On the way you will pass by an IHOP if you're looking for breakfast. The hotel has a restaurant, but I usually try to avoid it. The food is always disappointing.

If you are looking for food or nightlife, check out nearby Rainey Street. It's about a 10 minute walk. During the last two years this area of old (1920's) homes have been remodeled into some really cool bars and restaurants. It's a safe place to walk at night.

The hotel provides a shuttle that can take you to some of the restaurants, if they are within 2 miles and they aren't too busy. They normally just run back and forth to the airport.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms facing the freeway--it's noisy.

Great comments, particularly about our location. It’s always nice to hear from our guests how much they enjoy easy access to downtown and the progress Rainey Street has made over the last couple of years.

I do have to stress that, during our last renovation, we installed double paned window in all guest rooms. This does cut down on traffic noise but some guests are still sensitive to background noise. We can’t move the hotel or upgrade windows any further so we provide earplugs on request.

Thanks for being a loyal repeat guest. Guests like you are the lifeblood of our business. You may consider joining IHG Rewards. Our Rewards guests always receive an upgrade when available.

Please let me know if I can ever be of service.

So much so that we didn't stay the night. I had stayed at this hotel a few years ago and remembered it being a tad run down. But they had supposedly renovated since then. They have but it seems like it was mainly the exterior. The elevator has graffiti scratched into the doors and the celing is covered in grime. Our (first) room was directly across from the elevators that make a tremendouse clattering when opening and closing. The walls are thin so we could here people entering and exiting the elevators. The room was very dimly lit and seemed dirty. As I decided to ask to move, I noticed a very large (at least 1' by 1') dark stain on the carpet by bathroom.

We asked to move farther away from the elevators and got put 3 doors down, not exactly a big difference. Same dingy room. And more stains on the carpet. None as large as the one in the first room but a couple at least several inches across.

This hotel needs a massive renovation and I'm not sure Holiday Inn really does that anymore. We ended up leaving and going to another hotel on off of Barton Springs.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room before agreeing to stay

Thank you for the candid comments. You expressed concerns we’re aware of and in the process of addressing. These are issues that can directly impact our guest’s experience.

Unfortunately, there are guests who feel the need to leave us a token of their stay in the form of scratches in elevator cars. We’re considering refinishing with brushed steel as you may have seen elsewhere. The works of the elevators have also been recently redone so “tuning” the sensors is ongoing. The property was completely renovated in late 2008, inside and out.

Within the month, we’ll receive carpeting for most of our guest rooms. The stain you saw is a defect that shrinks the green fibers causing the appearance of a red spot. Lighting can sometimes cause the rooms to appear less than spotless. We’re exploring options to brighten the rooms. The Capital Tower is 46 years old so the design is not what we’re accustomed to these days. The pie shape is just different.

Although we didn’t meet your expectations, I hope you will give us another shot the next time Austin is in your travel plans.

We did not plan much going into our weekend, but as soon as we checked in we were helped by the front desk clerk named Stella. She was very welcoming immediately and apologized for our room not being ready (was not a big deal) so she gave us drink tickets to make up for it. She then proceeded to go above and beyond her job requirements by giving us info about a concert going on that night, and actually helping us look up if there were any tickets left. Long story short, we went to the concert--had a blast, and our weekend was pretty much made by Stella. I would recommend this hotel solely off of the customer service we received from her. Thanks Stella!

Room Tip: Overlooking the lake!
