“Lovely, peaceful place minus the jolt of a peacock call”
Reviewed March 4, 2014

If you're afraid of large birds, this is not the place for you. I find peacocks gorgeous, but their calls can be a little loud and they are definitely not concerned about the people coming in and out of this little gem.
We originally found this place for professional family photos, and then returned to do our daughter's first year photos. Please note that photos for your own use are allowed, but if you're having a professional take your pictures there is a permit that must be purchased.
There's also a trail here, but we haven't experience it ourselves. We found on our second trip that the house was being rented for a wedding, which looked like a cultural beauty as well!
Overall, a wonderful place to visit and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city without truly traveling.

“A Rare, Quiet Bit of Nature Within the City”
Reviewed February 25, 2014

Given the size of Austin, with its abundant bustle and traffic noise, it is refreshing to find a quiet respite within the city limits. This preserve seems to be under-utilized, which makes it an especially restful place to spend some time. There are several well-marked walking trails (including loops); they aren't particularly demanding, and they offer some very nice views. Benches are placed at some good viewpoints along the trails, so one can rest a bit and contemplate the river or the woods.

Peacocks roam freely near the house on the premises. Some prefer to fly up to low branches, or hang out on the roof, so "heads up" is good advice to make sure you don't miss anything.

“Under-Rated Escape from the City”
Reviewed February 23, 2014

Mayfield Park is about 10 minutes from downtown Austin, but it is a world removed. The park is probably most famous for the peacocks and the lotus ponds, and rightfully so. The peacocks are fun to watch and very photogenic, and the ponds reinforce the calming Zen mood that permeates the park.

An under-appreciated facet of the park is the hiking trails. They are not particularly challenging (in terms of length or elevation changes), but they can give you a decent work-out and they also run along part of Lake Austin. You won't necessarily see a lot of diverse animal wildlife, but it is still a pretty stretch of Austin to see.

There is also a cottage on the park grounds that can be rented for occasions like weddings or family gatherings.

Mayfield Park is great for families, couples and especially for younger children. It is free, and it is close enough to the Laguna Gloria art museum and Mount Bonnell Park that you can combine visits to 2 or all 3 of them in a half-day.

“A well hidden wonder”
Reviewed January 15, 2014

From the lookout in Austin, watch for the peacock crossing sign on Old Bull Creek Road, next to the Austin Museum of Art. The Mayfield Cottage is an old mansion, now a public building surrounded by these elegant birds. This corner of Austin was a unique opportunity to see these birds in a normal habitat.

“Neat Park to Visit”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

This is a great park to visit, especially if you are already visiting Mount Bonnel. There are nice trails to walk and explore, a house with a couple of ponds, and picnic benches. Parking is some what limited.
