Super 8 Austin/Airport South
Ranked #84 of 204 Hotels in Austin
Reviewed March 18, 2008

Well, my wife and I had reservations at another hotel and stayed there one night before encountering a roach. Needless to say we got out of there as fast as we could and stumbled upon this brand new Super 8 that had only been open for 20 days. It cost us a little more, but was well worth it. When we first walked into the lobby we encountered numerous flat screen televisions all around us, leather furniture, a small computer station with a printer and it was extremely clean. We checked in and to our surprise, the room was more than what we expected. The bed was one of the most comfortable beds we've ever slept on, the room was spotless, there was even a telephone in the bathroom. We are talking about Super 8! After speaking with the management they told us that the change is part of a national plan to upgrade all Super 8 motels because their research revealed that many people, especially the young upward mobile, were not staying at thier chain. I would highly recommend anyone looking for a room not to overlook this hotel because of the name.

We had high expectations when we arrived. Previous reviews rated this very high. We agree with all the reviews, it is great. They have a great bed but the 52” TV is a great plus.

I see previous reviews have described the good breakfast, did they mention they have Starbucks coffee and the machine makes wonderful foamy cappuccino as well great coffee.

Previous reviews rave about the rooms and they are correct. I am going to mention a couple of details that make this extra special. First there is a ceiling fan over the bed. The controls are a clever switch on the wall that controls the speed. The room has the standard heat/cool unit under the window BUT across the room is the thermostat control on the wall. The unit has a clear acrylic air flow deflector which is kept spotless and shinny. Telephones, did anyone mention them…one on the desk, one on each side of the king bed, one next to the couch and one the wall in the bathroom. Another thing I have never seen in a motel/hotel is the scale in the bathroom. They also provide a terry robe. They have both WIFI and a hard line internet access. Again they have gone one step further as they include directions on how to print from your room.

The final detail is the light switches on the wall, one on each side of the king bed over the night table. It turns out they turn on the bathroom light. No more stumbling around in the dark.

Excellent motel. Pillow top mattress with four big pillows on each bed, ceiling fan, phones in room and bathroom, huge breakfast selection (fresh fruit, Starbucks coffee, waffles, milk, cereal, scrambled and hard boiled eggs, sausage biscuits, bacon, juice), fresh fruit in lobby, desserts in lobby, movies for rent ($5) in lobby, gift bag with checkin, bottled water in room. If that's not enough, you can polish your shoes and sit in a massage chair in the lobby also. This hotel has thought of everything. Very friendly desk.

Jack in the Box on the corner across the parking lot. Motel sits near busy hwy but noise from hwy does not interfere with sleeping in the rooms.

The only thing I could find to criticize was the slope of the embankment one has to maneuver to reach the motel. Rather steep and car bottom may drag if car is heavily loaded or low to the ground.

We were in town for the MAKEr Faire at the city fairgrounds. It was about a 10 minute drive up the highway, but nothing unmanageable.

We found the hotel according to Tripadvisor, and they were a good deal. Fair price, clean room, nice breakfast. Wish it had a pool, but oh well.

Only minor complaint is that it's adjacent to the freeway, and in a bit of a lower-side of town, so we heard the kids cruising by with their "thumpa thumpa" cars.

Had no problems with front-desk staff; on the contrary, we had a good repore with them. Not sure what troubles other reviewers had, but we did just fine.

We booked the Asian suite (I think - the one with the swinging chair). Surprisingly enough, the swing actually is quite relaxing to sit on!

This is a beautiful new hotel. I was pretty worried about staying at a Super 8, but the reviews on this site were strong and there was not much else available in the town due to some big convention. Becasue it is new, all of the furnishings, the carpet, and the facilites are fresh.

The issue I had was that it is pretty far from town and no cabs come there and it is nearly impossible to get a cab to even come out and pick you up. We waited twice for over an hour before just giving up - the cabs never came anyway. Once the manager was nice enough to take us into town. The male manager was just terrrific. The woman behind the desk was cranky and unpleasant. We tried to get her to take us back to the airport, just a few miles away, hoping that we could catch a cab from there into town, but she refused saying that they did not use the shuttle unless you had pre-scheduled AND if you were catching a flight. It was very frustrating as the only place to eat nearby looked pretty low class (like a Twistee-Freeze or something) - thereby forcing you to eat there becasue there is no where else even remotely close and you will not get transportation to anywhere.

Luckily the male manager stepped in and took us into town, salvaging a nearly ruined evening. The woman behind the desk (maybe his wife or relative) nearly ruined the whole trip with her cranky attitude and her unwillingness to see the conundrum we were in being trapped there. She was unreasonable and bordered on vindictive.

Now, if I just needed a place to stay overnight and my only interest was in the airport OR if I had a car, I would be back in a New York minute. Otherwise - not again for me.

This hotel is unbelievable. I just went for one night. They were very friendly when I checked in and gave me a bag full of goodies. Since I checked in late I got the Asian Suite. It was a beautiful room with a four-post bed with mosquito-like netting over it. There was a huge television. The entire place was immaculate. They called me after a few minutes to check on me. It was the best stay I've had anywhere in a long time.
