“A cool spot with interesting and tasty food”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

Visited here during SXSW when I needed to grab a bite before meeting colleagues. I sat at the bar and ordered the cornflake chicken salad which came with home-made corn bread. The chicken was light and the cornflake crumb a perfect alternative to breadcrumbs. I've tried to make this myself previously and it's always ended up burnt!
A few locals chatted to me at the bar, which was nice and friendly and much appreciated as I had time to kill.
I drank prosecco as I was stunned at how cheap it was compared to UK prices. And it was good stuff.
The following night I attended a SXSW private dinner in the outdoor courtyard - which was a great setting (loved the overheard string of light bulbs). Again, the food and drinks were fabulous.

“Food Good - Wait Staff OK- Hostess was irritating”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

The food choices were great and the prices seemed reasonable. With the variety of people ordering different dishes, each of the comments about the food was great - and the side dishes from the sweet potatoes to the green chili grits got a lot of rave comments. Careful not to fill up on the spicy popcorn you are served when you first sit down... but now that makes me think that the second table service never was offered this!

The reason for my poor review has more to do with the attitudes of the staff - starting with the hostess. We were in town for the first time ever in Austin this week for a business conference. The hotel concierge recommended this restaurant since it was down the block from the Hilton and we were STARVED - it was about 4PM so we wanted a late lunch/food to hold us over meal - anything to stave off the hunger. Many of our travel companions were also hungry and were checking in - getting registered and were planning to meet us there.

We got there - no one was in the restaurant - yet we had to wait for the hostess to stop talking to a staff member - then she leaves and remembers we were standing there and said she'd be back. NOT a great first impression. The impression further deteriorated when we said we would likely be a party of 6, but that we were there and wanted to eat. The hostess said she could not seat us until the 80% of the party was there - mind you no one was in the restaurant - so we opted to get seated at a booth just so we could eat - although we explained more were coming. Once three more came - she moved us to another table - with a different waiter. We closed out our tab with our waitress Jacqueline (who was great - we had finished our meal at 4:30) - we chose to sit with the newly arrived colleagues to talk and catch up. The new waiter was at first standoffish - I think because he thought no one was planning to order a meal. Everyone else ordered food - a couple more joined us - then at 5:00 our last colleague finally came. The hostess came over shortly after that and asked us if anyone else was coming because she had a reservation at 6:30 for the table we were sitting at - over an hour away. That was finally the comment that was most irritating and really left a poor impression about this restaurant. I doubt I would ever go back or recommend it, despite the good food and the wait staff (who got nicer as we spent more money ).

“Definitely worth it.”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

Had early dinner here during SXSW. It was busy, but we were able to get a table in about 30min. We sat on the patio since we had our Maltese dog with us. (They allow dogs---Big Bonus!) Our waitress recommended the Corn Dog Shrimp, wasn't sure sounded a little gross. To my surprise, they are totally worth it, nothing like you've ever had.
For dinner I had the Green Chile Mac, the portion was HUGE & AWESOME! I ate until I wanted to pass out, and still boxed up over 1/2 of it to go. My husband had the Trout, he raved about it. (I don't like trout, so I'll take his word for it). Our kids each got the Smoked Half Chicken, it's smoked in a Dr. Pepper BBQ. Both of them were super juicy, and the Dr. Pepper adds a little something to the BBQ. Veggies were cooked just right: not to soggy or mushy.
Our waitress was great. She never rushed us and was honest when we asked about the food, especially with how ridiculously busy week we went.

The only disappointment I had was the beer selection. Which was dismal at best... unless you like Miller Light, Shiner, DosXXX Lager, and maybe handful others, don't go there to 'just' enjoy a few beers on the patio. The extremely limited beer selection is the only reason I can't give this a 5 out of 5!

“Great Food, Great Service!”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

The wait was very long but the food was excellent. We had the roasted garlic appetizer which was great. I had the country fried steak and mac and cheese. Surprisingly, it had a bit of a kick to the gravy but it was excellent. I am not generally a fan of hot food, and I still enjoyed it very much. The mac and cheese was good, I guess I am spoiled having just been to Seattle and eating the mac and cheese at Beecher's.. but still good.

“Fantastic!”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

Went here a couple of weekends ago for a friends birthday. The wait was long but it was well worth it. Once we got seated the service was great, as was the food. Don't miss out on the chicken and waffles! They are a must!
