We had just travel into Austin from Houston to meet some friends from Boston and have a nice night out with my son and his fiance as our guides and hosts. When we drove up to the Fonda San Miguel my first impression was "average", but I should have known better. Great Mexican and TexMex food thrives inside "average" and even "less than average" looking establishments, it is part of the whole scene. The lobby and guest receiving area inside Fonda San Miguel was a little small but very comfortable. We had a seat at the big central round table in the front to await our table for drinks, which became available after a very short wait. Somehow, it became evident immediately that this was going to be a very good evening. The hostess was very courteous and friendly and our waiter was immediately available to help the six of us to get seated and comfortable. The chips and salsa arrived immediately and the waiter began explaininig the menu to us, especially too our friends from Boston, and told us the daily special. This young man's style and approach to his job was to be very friendly, open and informative, displaying a lot of patience with us making for a very warm relationship. This, combined with the warm decor of the restaurant, the low key music and the great food turned this into one of the best evening meals I have ever experienced. We ordered dessert, sat around and visited with coffee and did just about everything we could to stay, relax and enjoy. But, alas, we finally had to leave. This was indeed a great meal in a great place.
