“Classic Austin Landmark Restaurant”
Reviewed February 28, 2013

Fonda San Miguel has been a special restaurant in Austin since it started more than
thirty years ago. Brunch is exceptional! with a taste of nearly everything that has been
on the menu. In the beginning there was a very strong influence from Diana Kennedy
who shared some recipes. The atmosphere is incredible though some of the initial staff
who were special people have moved on (including the overly independent parrot). Here
are some recommendations for dishes to try: carne asada, camarones, and especially
the cochinita pibil! Try the top shelf margarita on the rocks and go back to see the oven
where the hand-made tortillas originate.

“Good but a little formulaic”
Reviewed February 23, 2013 via mobile

Beautiful room, with a lot going on.

Ordered two appetizers and an entree to share. All three dishes came out together. The fried oysters were tasty but not hot. The tostadas were somewhat nondescript; couldn't tell chicken from pork from guacamole with all the other sauces on them. (A generic complaint of Mexican food I know.)

Shrimp in chipotle cream sauce was excellent. Could have used more rice to soak up the sauce.

Tres leches cake was awesome! Surprisingly, there was no decaf tea available.

Service was enthusiastic, maybe a tad too much so. (Yes, we're from NY.)

“Best Brunch In Austin”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

The brunch at Fonda San Miguel's is the very best in Austin. If you are lucky, the chef will be featuring grilled quail which is randomly offered. It's embarrassing to say how many little birds were eaten at our table. With an interior mexican menu, all the specialities were freshly served and questions happily answered about the dishes. If you have a sweet tooth, the desert table is too tempting to pass so save room. And don't forget the margarita's!

“An excellent choice”
Reviewed February 6, 2013 via mobile

I have finally made it to this restaurant. And wow, what an awesome treat.

The building has lots of beautiful characters, inside and outside.

The service was very prompt. The chips and two salsas were a very nice start.

We started out with the Lamb chops appetizer, which were perfectly good and very tasty.

We ordered two different shrimp dishes for our entrees and both were very flavorful.

I will most certainly return to enjoy the atmosphere and the delicious food.

“Finally Real Mexican Food!”
Reviewed January 29, 2013

One of the best places to get authentic Mexican food. Sunday brunch is probably the best time to visit.
