Owner description: We are in the business of improvisational theatre. We make up all our comedy, plays, and sketches on the spot (unless otherwise noted). Short form, long form, Chicago-Style, NY-Style, CA-Style, Austin-Style - we do it all (especially Austin-Style, it's our specialty). We host and produce improv shows Thursday through Sunday. For some of the shows, we invite independent groups to perform (everything you see on Thursday night, for instance) and some of the shows we personally produce (everything you see on Saturday night, for instance). In addition, the Hideout is downtown Austin's oldest independent coffee house. We are open morning to night, weekdays and weekends and serve beer, wine, fresh sandwiches, pastries, ice cream, as well as an assortment of beverages and coffee drinks. We proudly feature vegan ice cream from our friends at Sweet Ritual and our specialty craft cocktails were designed by Laura Nixon of Bad Dog Barcraft. You can bring food and drink from the coffee house up into the theatre to enjoy during a performance!

“Great coffee and laughs”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

I loved the coffee shop attached to the theatre. They had a great menu with a nice selection of drinks and some vegan desserts. The theatre venue was nicely arranged and comfortable. We watched improv comedy, and it was generally funny - sort of generic humor most of the time though. I'd definitely recommend checking it out!

“Southern Style Improv”
Reviewed February 24, 2013 via mobile

We love Improv. After having been to the UCB and Second City, so the bar is set pretty high. That being said, the Hideout was good for a fix. While the while troupe was amusing, there was one player in particular , Doug SomebodyOrAnother, that was at a whole other level. We were genuinely surprised that he wasn't a professional in NYC, Chicago, or LA. Unfortunately, he wasn't in the whole show. We saw a show called Maestro. It's competitive improv that starts with 12 players divided into teams and has one winner. We weren't really a big fan of that because if a good player is teamed with an average player, or they are given a poor premise, they can be eliminated early. That's what happened to the Doug.

All an all it was definitely worth the price of admission.

“Great Intimate Improv Comedy!”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

Visited the Hideout on New Year's Eve for one of their two comedy improv shows that evening. The theater is located in the back of the coffee shop at the same location. The theatre is small but it does not lack good quality fun, comedy, and entertainment. I chose this show on a whim, never had been to Austin but thought I would give it a try as seeing their ad in a tourism Austin magazine at my hotel. I definitely was treated to a great show! They allow you to bring snacks and drinks into the theater while they preform the show. Many of the skits are performed from audience suggestions. If you are looking for a great comedy show with an intimate feel, I would recommend seeing a show at the Hideout Theatre!
