Owner description: Trendy Austin area south of Congress Avenue.

Austin prides this part of town for being off beat and more funky with ts shops and restaurants. However, having traveled to many other cities this did not seem to have as much allure as there are areas in other places that are similar and on a grander scale.

No arguing that there are good, not great restaurants on South Congress, we have been to a half dozen since we moved to Austin ( see individual reviews) and while enjoyable, none were memorable or even rated a " lets come back" nod from my wife or I.

The shops could be called "funky" but we thought "dated" would be a better term. See them once and your done.

Parking is terrible and needs to be expanded, best to come here by taxi.

I really enjoyed the Hopdoddy Burger Bar and Lucy's Fried Chicken, although Lucy's does not have smoke free outdoor seating.

South Congres (SoCo) is a great way to spend a day poking through unique shops, dining in a variety of restaurants, or sitting on a covered patio people watching. Places not to miss: Big Top Candy (an old-fashioned candy store), Tresoros (Mexican & central American artworks) and Uncommon Objects (perhaps the greatest, most unique antique store on earth. For something sweet, hit the Hey, Cupcake! airstream trailer and grab one of their cupcakes - and pay a little extra for a whipped cream shot in the middle. It's delish!

Go into every store whether you think you will like it or not. Each one is eclectic and fun. Great way to spend an afternoon just strolling up and down. There are also food trucks and great restaurants. Visit Uncommon Goods, Allen Boots, Big Candy Shop. I recommend starting at Magnolia Café for breakfast and working your way back towards the city.
Tip
The day I went I had a hard time catching a cab back into Downtown proper. I wound up walking to 6th street Downtown before getting one. If you are on a time constraint set aside extra time just in case!
