I've lived in Austin for over ten years, and always tell newbies or visitors that a must go-to area to check out is SoCo. There are amazing shops, restaurants, food trucks, and just the site from SoCo to the state capital is amazing.

An absolute "must do" for an Austin visitor. It's the heart of Austin at it's funkiest & most relaxed with lots of good shops, food trailers, restaurants, etc. Enjoy! & Don;t forget to go to Home Slice Pizza!

This place is full of shops that I enjoy just to get away from it all. Uncommon Objects is probably one of the best places to visit - the shop has little 'vignettes' of things for sale, odd things, keep an open mind, you might make a purchase of old postcards or something else.

South Congress used to be really cool, just on the edge of what you would do. Now it is just a bunch of chain restaurants posing as weird with one-hour long waits and mediocre food. The parking situation is ridiculous.

Young, hip, and fun area of town. We stayed in the San Jose and it was walking distance to all the great little locally owned shops and restaurants.
