Don't let the lines deter you. This place is not just another trendy locavore haunt. It's positively buzzing with creativity and passion, all of which you'll taste in every bite. We sighed and exclaimed all through our dinner at Barley Swine--the best we'd had on this continent in...oh, years, probably. The intensity of flavor brought back memories of Italy but the boundary-pushing flavor combos (e.g., pork belly, lavender and pumpkin seed) had homegrown Texas swagger. Favorite dish? Maybe the scallops and brussels sprouts with peanuts and grapefruit, but there wasn't one dish we didn't scarf down with joy. Barley Swine was a highlight of our trip to Austin and we'd hoped to sample the rest of the menu on a return visit. Silly us, we sauntered in at 8 for what we hoped would be a half-hour wait and were told, "At least an hour." Follow the locals' advice and go early.

While the menu if full of exotic and unique flavor combinations, the items are simply prepared and are allowed to stand on their own, with sauces and sides being a compliment to the main item's taste.

I travel extensively and have eaten in some of the best restaurants all over the world. I would rank Barley Swine has one of the top 10 restaurants in the world.

The atmosphere is OK and is more casual than fine dining, but the service, food experience and tastes are second to none.

Everything is served tapas style, with prices ranging from $7 to $15 per plate. There are about 10 main dishes and 3 deserts to choose from. We tried one of everything and for a party of three with wine our bill ran $240. The menu changes every month. All the dishes are beautifully presented and meticulously and creatively crafted.

The friends I dined with have eaten at the French Laundry in northern California, and said the food compares to their amazing experience there.

The place is small (seats about 40, communal style), and you have to often wait up to 90 minutes to be seated. But if you arrive to get in line (there are no reservations) by 5:30, you'll likely get a seat when the restaurant opens at 6. Otherwise the courteous hostess will take your name and cell phone number and call you when a table opens up.

If you love food and want to taste the work of one of the finest new chefs in the culinary world, get your but over the Barley Swine now before the rest of the world discovers this great new restaurant.

Small plates with a lot of taste. We shared several plates among our party of 7. The food was creative with a lot of flavor. Hostess and servers were very nice.

This new resturant tied with Congress for the best new resturant in Austin for 2011. The food was terrific as was the service. No reservations, arrive early or be prepared to wait.
