“First Class History Museum...at a Price”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

High quality exhibits that focus mainly on the history of Texas. There are other exhibits (including one on mammals when we visited). It is a great way for people of all ages to learn more about Texas whether you are a visitor or a resident.

Be sure to also watch the 'show/movie' in the Spirit of Texas theater. It is an interactive theater (think air blowing to match the movie, vibration in the seat, etc.).

With 3 young children, their attention span is short, but the price of entry is high. With the price of parking at $8, and separate admission prices for the exhibits, and the videos, it was about the same price for a year long membership as one visit. A family of five can easily cost $80 for one movie, admission, and parking.

“Want to learn about Texas? Come here!”
Reviewed December 26, 2013

Not too big, not too small, but just right, especially with entry at about $10 for an adult. Street metered parking might save you a few $$ too, if you're not planning on staying more than an hour or two. With a 4D theater, a separate IMAX theater (with both feature films and IMAX documentaries), travelling exhibits, and a great permanent collection of Texas history, this museum is a real hit for our kids and any guests we have who want to learn a bit about Texas history. The Spirit of Texas film in the 4D theater has some fun surprises that will make it memorable for kids and adults alike. The museum also has a cafe and well stocked muesum store full of Texas history and memorabilia. It is well located just a couple of blocks from the capital and right across the street from UT Blanton Museum of Art, so you can easily make it a museum day through adding another stop or two.

“Exploring Austin”
Reviewed December 26, 2013

This museum offers a complete overview of the history of Texas, from its beginnings to today. There is something for kids, teens and adults. You can walk freely, rent a narator to listen to as you walk the museum and take in the multiple short films.

Interesting film about heroes of Texas, The Spirit, is worth seeing. Lots of items and exhibits to view, touch, interact with. From early 1600s to present day space program. Convenient parking under museum. Wheelchairs available.
