“Beautiful birthday dinner”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

We were visiting Austin for a couple of days, and Uchiko was so highly recommended by friends that it made a very short list of places we were able to visit. My boyfriend booked our table several weeks in advance, and we were seated in the smaller room closer to the entrance, which I liked a lot. The decor is beautiful throughout, and we were greeted warmly. Everyone we interacted with wished me a happy bday. I wish I could remember our servers name, because he was a large part of why we had such a great experience. My boyfriend is a chef, and had a few questions about the prep of certain items, and he was attentive and able to discuss everything in detail. He recommended several dishes, and everything we ordered was outstanding. The brussel sprouts, the sea bream, the rolls- it was hard to choose a favorite.
The tables are not uncomfortably close together, but the group who sat down next to us had spent quite awhile at the bar beforehand, and were borderline obnoxious. (At one point, we heard the woman say to the server "We're going to make your life hell now", before ordering). He handled it/them so well, and the situation kept us pretty entertained. Overall, we had a great experience, and the next time we're in Austin we'll certainly return to Uchiko.

“Strange in a good way”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

We went to Uchiko based on some recommendations. When we got seated and read the menu, I was sure we had made a mistake. Our group of 4 eats out regularly, but we had trouble identifying what many of the items were on the menu.

The server was superb at helping us navigate. We sampled many items. We loved the brussel sprouts and the ham and eggs sushi. We all loved all of our selections...the only exception was dessert. It was a special dessert they had done for Valentines day, but it was not great.

Glad we went. It is worth a try, and trust your server, they know their menu.

I love Uchiko. The ingredients are really fresh and the combos of flavors are quite unique. You must try the brussels sprouts and the chicken. Soooo good!

What an amazing Japanese restaurant! Try the grilled edamamae beans, they are surreal. The hot rock wagyu beef is also unbelievable. Wash it all down with a bottle of wakatake onikoroshi sake. You are in for a treat!

“What an Experience!”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

While my visit was only for happy hour at the bar, it was still fantastic. I had the koviche which was a fresh diver scallop with kalamata and black lime - sweet and succulent! The brussel sprouts were cooked crisp with lemon chili sauce and were fantastic as well. My drink was a Ryoshuu which contained sparkling wine, elderflower, bitters and blueberry - crisp, bubbly, not too sweet - divine! The whole experience, while a little expensive, was a nice treat for a special occasion!!
