You don't need too much time here but the views down the river are great. There are a few trails you can check out as well, but the eyefull by the river is the highlight. Parking is a bit tricky because it is popular but it could have been worse.

When you get bored of the flatness that is Texas, Mt Bonnell seems to offer a really pretty diversion. It's not too far of a drive from downtown Austin. Very easy walk to the top if you avoid the stairs (just drive on a little bit further and you'll see a trail going up). The views of downtown Austin are OK, but the views on the other side (that the trail will follow, not the stairs) are of the wide and gorgeous Colorado River. Very pretty... and nice mansions down below by the river.
Nice-to-go after all the Tex-Mex and tacos...

It's a bit of a drive and then a walk to get to the top but what a view. You can look into some pretty impressive yards up and down the river. On a nice day take a picnic.

We hiked to the top of Mount Bonnell with our cameras and there are some nice views of downtown Austin. It isn't a very big place at the top and it's not really all that well-maintained, but it's a nice enough jaunt. Not a place I'd really take out-of-town friends or want to go again, though it's nice to go once.

Mount Bonnell gives you a fantastic view not only of the city but of the Colorado River also. We parked close to the steps (they say there are 100, we didn't count) which take you to the top. We didn't find out until we got to the top that there is another way up which is a whole lot easier. If you don't like steps, park a little further north on Mount Bonnell Dr. and look for the gravel path. The views are definitely worth the effort.
