The view from the top of the Mt. Bonell is spectacular. So is the little hike. You can either trudge along the trail ,which affords gorgeous views along the walk , as well take the stairs. The little rest area has some useful historical information. Catch the beautiful views of the lake , bridge and the vistas beyond.

If you're not from Austin, everyone has the same reaction the first time you lookout over the city from Mt. Bonnell "I can't believe this is Texas". I remember the first time I saw it when I was in college. I had lived in Austin for over a year and had no idea about the hills and "lakes" (Colorado River). Since there is a pretty steep climb up some stairs it is definitely rewarding when you get to the top.

We took our grandparents here when they visited but word of caution that the climb is steep so if someone has a disability or is not well this might not be the place to take them in 100+ degree heat.

Once you get to the top there isn't much to do other than enjoy the view, take some pictures and then head back down but this is a great place to give someone a different perspective on the city and the Hill Country.

I live in Austin and just don't get Austin's fascination with Mt Bonnell. Short, easy up hill walk (lots of stairs) to see a mediocre view. Its a free attraction, but certainly not worth skipping something better or making a special trip (or paying for a taxi ride) to see.
If you go, you might snag one of the few parking spaces near the entrance, otherwise park on the side of the road.
I'd skip it unless you've run out of other things to do, have never been anywhere with altitude, or have never seen a river.
