Found this under trip advisors list of things to do in Austin. So glad we came to tour the grounds and see the graves of Texas heros. The 9/11 memorial was touching along with the memorials for men & women in the armed service that have sacrificed for us.
It was simply beautiful here, must stop & walk around.

Major figures in Texas history are buried here. Stephen F. Austin, the father of Texas. Many former governors, Senators, legislators, and war heroes. Even Fred Gibson, the author of Old Yeller.

The grounds are beautiful, and there's a terrific visitors' center. All should come, but For Texans, it's a must stop.

Went here on a school field trip preparing to be bored. It was amazing! Bob Bullock oversaw the renovation of the cemetery and it is great quality, like his museum. Found it interesting that James Michener has a stone, but is not buried there. Barbara Jordan and many other contemporary Texans are there as well as Alamo and even Civil War heroes. Worth the time, especially if you are studying Texas history and have specific people's grave/memorial to look for. We saw a horse-drawn caisson with a casket coming to bury someone...it was beautiful.
