“Great Place to stay when visiting UT”
Reviewed September 3, 2012 via mobile

We visited Austin recently for our son to tour the University of Texas. We have visited several other campus' and most of the time the hotel options are slim and not appealing. AT&T was a welcome exception from the pre check in emails, to the easy check in and out and the well appointed rooms it was a gem. We could explore the campus and downtown Austin easily.
. My biggest complaint would be that to use the computers in the business center were expensive. (6+ dollars for 15 minutes) Also the parking was a little steep for Austin. $14 for self park $24 for valet. I live in DC and to park there is $17 per day for a much bigger and more expensive city. Those two items keep me from awarding 5 stars for value.

This is rated as a 4 star. It is a very nice place right next to the UT campus. It was quiet, clean and very updated. U-verse was nice! and the rooms were very modern and not run down. There really isn't much to do there as for activities as the pool is VERY small and only 3' deep and no spa. parking was $14/day with in/out prividges which was nice. This is not near nor is it in walking distance of 6th street but it has it's own little group of small restraunts and bars close. The views are great from the rooms and ours was awesome with an adjoined balcony to anoterh 6 rooms. The staff was VERY nice and I purchased this on priceline. They gave me a choice of rooms which most don't when you book thru a third party. Just an extremely nice/clean/updated room that's away from the busy parts of the bar district.

I confess - I picked the AT&T Center for our son's audition at UT-Austin in January 2012 because it is located right on UT's campus and could not be more convenient.

I returned there for our family trip to enroll him in August 2012 because of the service and the ambiance.

The rooms are generously sized (at least for this New Yorker), tastefully decorated and sensibly arranged. The beds are comfortable, the desk and seating is functional (even comfortable) and not an afterthought as it can be even at more elite hotels. The home team orange touches are restrained rather than overbearing - the right balance of local pride and hospitality.

The public spaces are comfortable and welcoming without being too "corporate" or industrial - the right mix of overstuffed seating in interesting groupings so there is a good place to wait for others or enjoy coffee. The coffee bar actually serves drinkable coffee, and even the gift shop is interesting (souvenir fare to be sure, but eclectic and for the most part not junk).

The two restaurants were worth visiting. We enjoyed casual fare and a good selection of draught beer at the Gabriel, where the evening bartender is friendly and helpful without interfering with a conversation. The breakfast buffet at the Carillon was tasty, with traditional as well as Southwestern offerings. Both were good values (not free mind you, but the price reflected a fair charge for good quality, and the portions were generous without being guilt-inducing or leading to excess consumption).

But the real reason to stay at this hotel is the tone of the service. From the impossibly young men at the ground-level entrance to Tanja and her compatriots at the front desk, the tone is one of warm and respectful service without being either too cutesy or too solicitous. Not to harp on the "balance" idea, but the staff to a person displayed a good mix of being appropriately formal with showing genuine interest in making us feel well cared for. My experience has been that this consistent tone is the result of intelligent management who understand the art of making a visitor feel welcome.

There are cheaper hotels not too far from the campus (we stayed in one for a quick overnight after a trip to the Round Top Music Festival before flying out - but that will be a separate review). Perhaps the best praise I can give the AT&T Center is that it delivers value that makes the small additional expense feel like money well spent.

Room Tip: On one of our trips, we stayed in a room with a queen Murphy bed that could fold into a wall unit, l...

We arrived after staying at the Omni in downtown Austin the night before. Unfortunatly, the Omni was sold out the second night on our stay so we did Priceline for a 4 star hotel in downtown. We ended up at the AT&T education and conference hotel. I read the rooms were very small compared to most hotel in downtown, so we requested a larger room with a view of the city. Once we arrived to our room, there was zero air. I know many hotels are working toward green sustainability, but at least keep the air on 78 or so to keep it from being musty. It took about an hour to cool, and in Texas that is a long time to be hot in a room that prices at $169 to $300+ a night. As I checked the air vets, there was so much dust that it was blowing out everywhere....not to mention the entire room had dust all over the desk and night stands. I am assuming this room had been vacant a long time. The view of the city was unfortunatly not what we asked for, because there is stained glass on half the windows, so you would have to be 7 feet tall to see anything. The room felt so cramped and closed in due to the stained glass and the other window didn't really have a view of anything. The room was the size of a motel 6 and the fridge didn't work that was provided either. It made a humming noise all night, but we were able to turn up the tv to avoid the annoyance. Now, I wish I wasn't assigned this hotel through Priceline, because I read the beds were not comfortable. Boy, was that the truth. It squeeked every time you sat or moved on it and felt like concrete. Of course, coming from the Omni beds the night before...that made it even harder. The few positives are: Free wifi and good room service. They charge the usually expensive valet parking but the valet guys were very nice and helped us with directions. They were tipped very well for their services. I would never stay here again and will make sure to pay a little extra to stay closer to downtown. With Priceline, we paid 125 for the one night. One last thing, as room service was delivered we notice a small black bug on the comforter that I thought I felt crawl on me earlier that might. Not sure if it was because the room seemed vacant for sometime or what, but very gross nonetheless. Two stars for valet help and food.

Room Tip: If you must stay here, don't ask for a room with a view that has half the widow covered in stain...

Dear Julia F.,

I am quite sorry you had an experience with us that was less than excellent. Many of our guests love that room with two walls of natural light, but I can understand that the privacy frosting was not what you were wanting for your city view. While we do have motion control thermostats, every room should be exceptionally clean and I'm sorry we came up short with this one, this time. We have since fixed the bed and refrigerator and appreciate the feedback about the food and bellmen. I sure hope you give us another chance to experience what so many others have called a great and excellent hotel. Thanks for the feedback!

We recently had our daughter's wedding here. Austin has great outdoor venues to choose from but my daughter had been to enough outdoor weddings to know that her's would be indoors. We had family coming in from NY and Indiana so we needed everything to be in one place. The ATT center was the perfect venue, ballroom and hotel in the same place, close to downtown Austin and brand new!!! The rooms were immaculate, state of the art, energy efficient and quiet. Unlike the huge mega hotels downtown the ATT center had a casual, homey feel to it with plenty of place to hang out with family. The eating venues are great and you are on the UT campus so there are tons of places to go and see! The Presidentail suite was amazing as was the interior parlor suite which consisted of a living room area with couch, eating table and a queen murphy bed in the wall with its own bathroom and connecting door to the next door King bedroom with another bath. We had this room and my parents used the King. Guests with children loved this room and even brought their own babysitters! You can get this room with or without the connecting King and the rate is great for both!
The food served at the wedding received rave reviews from the guests!!! We had the Olive Oil poached tenderloin and it was cooked to perfection. You can order it at their restaurant and I'd highly recommend it!
The convenience of leaving the ballroom and walking to your room across the atrium was so very convenient for those guests that chose to stay at the AT&T center. No one had to drive home.
I would stay here anytime we needed a room in Austin. Taxi to downtown was inexpensive and easy to get at the front door. Sports bar is a great gathering place. Small pool but very nice as is workout room!
If you are having an event and are in need of rooms this venue is the best!!! Don't overlook it!

Room Tip: check out interior parlor room and interior parlor suite for more room.

Terrific hotel with good beds, desks for working, big beautiful shower, lots of counter space, refrigerators, free microwaves, etc. Staff is very courteous and helpful. I also enjoyed their well-equipped gym and was happy to see that when a bunch of fraternity boys were drinking beer in the pool, the manager or someone in authority apparently saw it via close-circuit and dealt with the situation. The boys weren't rude, but I was nervous about kids drinking beer (and tequila, actually) in a pool in the hot sun. The property is within two minutes walk of the university, but if you want to go downtown, you'd either need a car or to take the bus--it's pretty far. I did walk it, but it took 45 minutes each way, which is a lot in the sun. Do note that the "executive suite" does not have a desk as pictured on numerous booking sites. It would be better if you're interviewing people and need a round table with chairs and a murphy bed that will fold into the wall. They are also kind of small. The hotel switched me to a better room, but unfortunately also charged me a higher price.

This place is great, perfect combination of good accommodation, conference rooms and with an Imax just across the street! Great restaurants all around. The food was not my favorite, though - everything had curry!

Room Tip: University view is a great option!
