“A nice hotel, but not the best Four Seasons”
Reviewed June 24, 2007

The Four Seasons Austin is a nice hotel with beautiful grounds set at the edge of Town Lake. You can't do anything ON Town Lake...no swimming, boating, etc, which is actually nice because your views are of a quiet, 'uninterrupted' lake.

The room are nice, with very comfortable beds, but the furniture itself is not remarkable. I've stayed in nicer Four Seasons rooms. One thing I didn't like is the shower...it has half a glass door, so you don't get quite warm like you do with a full panel or curtain...always a bit of a cold breeze!

The bar/cafe is expensive, but this is a Four Seasons. I can understand an $18 hamburger and a $48 brunch at a resort destination, but in Austin it's a little rediculous. (If you want a fantastic hambuger...go to Huts off 6th street.)

The pool is also not very impressive. A small circular shaped pool with no waterfalls, pretty decor, etc. Just a pool, basically.

So what makes it a good choice to stay in at Austin? The Four Seasons service for one. Also the grounds are very pretty, it's a quiet hotel, AND they will have what sounds like an awesome Spa opening in July 2007. It's in a good location downtown, with just about a $3 to $5 cab fare to get you to 6th Street and other restaurants/nightlife.

We recently stayed for a long weekend and a family event. I always wanted to stay at a Four Seasons, they were supposed to be the best. Although there were some very nice and personal touches, it really didn't impress me as much as I thought it would.

The property has some construction going on, which I believe is supposed to be finished soon, and that should solve some of the problems/disappointments we encountered.

First, the only way to reach the pool from the guest rooms is to go through the lobby, down a long hallway, and stairs - through spaces being used for events. The only restrooms available near the pool are simply hallway restrooms for the event rooms - - which was both embarrassing and inconvenient.

The only fitness equipment currently available are about 6 or so treadmills/eliptical machines set up in a conference room on a guest floor. Not exactly what you would expect from a world class hotel, and certainly not at $215 per night.

There were some mix-ups in our attempts to get the proper place for our toddler to sleep - first, an infant bassinet was delivered, then what appeared to be a Pack n Play that had no padding - my son would have been sleeping on the floor. We finally rececieved a very nice crib and gift basket with baby items (shampoo, powder, etc...) and an adorable Bevo stuffed animal - which was really lovely.

The night clerk on duty - Dwayne - was a complete sweetheart and was very helpful. Just about everyone we ran into made a big deal over our son - which is very nice. The staff was super professional.

In the a.m., there is complimentary coffee, tea, bottles of water and mini-muffins. In the afternoon, they serve some of the best lemonade I have ever tasted - - - - - both set-ups are a very classy touch.

The lobby bar is gorgeous - just a beautiful and comfortable space - - - but ridiculously overpriced - $12 for a cocktail. That is just silly.

Overall, like the title says, there were some really nice touches, but it just wasn't as great as I thought it would be.

  • Liked — friendliness of the staff
  • Disliked — no fitness center, very poor set up for pool

I stayed at this hotel for a conference. At first I thought the decorations around the hotel really did not fit a Four Seasons image.... but it was a very warm ambiance that I started to like. It felt like you were coming home to a warm surrounding. All employees were very polite and helpful.

The staff is immaculate and went out of their way to help and accomodate. The rooms were clean and tidy. I loved the shower facility which was not curtain at all but had a glass door.

The gym was nice and small with amenties for guest to use for no CHARGE! The pool was out of the way to get to but was a nice pool using salt water, located behind their hotel that is facing the nice nature scenery behind the hotel.

The concierge tried to answer all my tourist questions and also was very accomodating but holding our packages for the conference without CHARGING which is a very big deal compared to other hotels who do charge for every little thing possible.

The Guest office was very nice as well fully stocked allowing you to print in blk/white and color for free and had office supplies for your need. From a colleagues experience they even faxed her papers without a charge!

This is the way to go when travelling.... over the top service with over the top use of facilities without all those secret hidden charges.

Other than that they do charge for room internet. BUt hey if you don't want to pay you can always use the guest office free internet computer!

I love FOUR SEASONS!

  • Liked — I loved the personnel touches Four Seasons does for the guest. ie- REceiving fruit in the room with out being asked
  • Disliked — Having to pay for internet.

I stay here twice a year on business. It is not as upscale as other Four Seasons I've been to but it's still very good. The service at check in is nice and cordial. They already know my room preferences and offer upgraded rooms if available. Service all around is quite good as you would expect from a Four Seasons. The rooms are well done. I really enjoy the beds at Four Seasons. They are up there with the heavenly beds at the Westins. I sleep like a champ in these beds. The bathrrom is all marble. Water pressure in the shower could be stronger. The bath products are by L'occitane. You don't hear much noise from the hallways when the door is closed. Room service is very efficient but expensive. The restaurant downstairs is nice. You can dine outdoors overlooking the lake. It's nice but can get very warm.
The gym is small but adequate. You can rent bicycles just outside the gym. The pool is a small oval shape. Not great for doing laps, but fine for a dip. The bar area is actually very nice to grab a drink before dinner.
Location is a bit of a pain. If you'd like to walk out to grab a coffee or drug store, it's a 10 minute walk outside.
Overall, the hotel is very good. As a business traveller, I'm perfectly content.

I spend a lot of time in Four Season Hotels....Hong Kong, Paris and New York are probably the top of their game. With that said, Austin is your standard Four Seasons. If indeed your "standard" is first cabin.
Excellent restaurant and staff.
The complaints I have read about this hotel , "No newspaper" (its on two items in your room, door hangers, where you can request what papers you would like in the morning, or call the front desk. Another guest was upset because the "River " in Austin is a lake. Yup, you are right, it is the hotel's fault. Had to walk thru the hotel in your bathing suits...I guess they missed the two luxurious bathrobes hanging behind the bathroom door, or they could have changed at the gym locker room, no charge for the full amenities.
This is an excellant hotel. In all my years of staying with Four Seasons, I have had one problem. I called Customer Service in Canada (800 number) and was informed I had a free weekend at the Santa Barbara location in a suite.
Yup, its a worthless organization. Everybody , please stay somewhere else. I wont have a problem making a reservation then.

We only spent one night at The Four Seasons in Austin but it was a very enjoyable one. We arrived early Friday evening on February 2, 2007 to attend a birthday party at the Shoreline Grill (an excellent restaurant by the way) which is down the block from The Four Seasons. Our flight was late by almost an hour and we only had about 20 minutes to check in and freshen up before the party. The staff in the reception area were very friendly and efficient we were in our room in less than two minutes. The room was very nice, exactly what you would expect from a hotel of that quality. The bathroom was large with ample counter space on the sink for my cosmetics bag, flat iron and all my husband's toiletries as well. L'Occitane toiletries are very nice too. On our way out we noticed the people in the bar looked like they were having a great time, too bad we didn't have time to stay for a drink. A staff member outside not only directed us to the restaurant but walked us halfway down the block until we saw the entrance which was hidden down a small flight of stairs and hard to see as it was already dark. Upon returning to the hotel after the party I inquired about places to just get coffee in the morning since I am an early riser and my husband is not. I was told about a Starbuck's about a block away in another hotel but also about the complimentary coffee right in front of the bar area and reception desk for early risers (I believe it is available only until about 7:00am). The next morning I was up early and went down for coffee and it was just as I expected. Several coffee urns, hot water for tea, to go cups if that is your preference but there was the unexpected surprise of mini muffins. They were perfect just the right size and quite good. Next stop was the fitness room which was staffed by at least four staff members. They were so nice and friendly and not only did they provide water with lemon and lime slices they insisted on making it for you and bringing it to you on your cardio equipment. Personal flat screens for every piece of cardio equipment and clean headphones are exactly what I expected from a hotel of that caliber. The fitness room also had fruit and more coffee. All in all a good experience. Would definitely stay there again when in Austin.

No newspaper in the morning.
A clogged shower.
Hassled upon check in (even with a reservation in hand).
Complaints upon check out greeted with a, "sorry".

Rooms are fine. Lobby is nice. Service is on par with Hilton or Marriott.

But for the prices, then go stay at the Hilton.
