“Post-SXSW SoCo Comedown”
Reviewed February 17, 2012

Well this is more like it, prefer these smaller boutique hotels, places with something unique and characterful. After a week of festivities, relocating to this place in the SoCo district was just the tonic. Surrounded by wonderful diners, great shopping and quirky boutiques, the Austin Motel exudes charm and a more personal touch. It may be a tatted-up hipster location, but both the motel and the area are so laid-back and relaxed, it's hard not to just while away the days ambling along. Rooms were claen and very reasonable, and friendly reception staff.Loved it.

We stayed 3 nights at Austin Motel, fully enjoyed our stay... we had one of the small rooms for $85 each night and loved it. You can walk to many stores and resturants and if you like you can walk to 6th street, we did twice and I am very overweight.... This place is a bargin and I will be back.

I had a blast staying here! But the rooms are the extreme form of retro. They are funky and colorful. The "old seventies chair" in the corner really is an old seventies chair. If you prefer the 2012 version of the old Dodge Challenger, don't stay here. If you like the original muscle car, and don't mind a little rust in the floorboards, you'll have a great time. Be sure and log on to their website. They have photos of each individual room, so you can choose your flavor of funk. Location among the clubs and vintage shops is awesome. If you ever wanted David Lynch to design your Valentine Getaway, choose that bright pink one by the pool...

Room Tip: Go to Motels website, click on individual room numbers. They have photos of each room, band they are...

That's what you're getting when you stay at this Austin institution. The room is clean and BASIC. When I called to make the reservation (no online reservation system)-I asked if there was a coffee maker in the room since I didn't see that on the list of amenities (and I'm a caffeine addict/fiend) and was told "no". No problem-we just toted along our Kuerig. Better tote along your box of tissue, shampoo, soft towels and iron/ironing board if you want-that's not there either. As I said before the room was clean and really all we needed. The Snack Bar restaurant is next to the lobby and EXCELLENT. We were able to park right outside our door and there's no parking charge. The place was pretty quiet, except for our heavy footed upstairs neighbor. I recommend this place and we will stay here again. If you decide to stay here just remember that you're paying for location, funkiness and as the card on the back of the hotel room door says "an old fashioned motel experience". Just bring along any necessities you can't live without.

Room Tip: If you want quiet, stay upstairs.

Our room was decorated southwestern. Clean, basic and comfortable. We found staff to be very friendly. The maid went out of her way for us. Restaurants and shops walking distance. We would return.

For a first-time visitor, this motel was heaven. Fun, artful, very friendly helpful staff, perfect location! We stayed in two rooms: 262 and 117. Both were clean and comfortable. The place was booked for the NYE weekend, but the manager found us a great room to extend our stay. First come, first serve.

The motel is right next to Jo's coffee house, a favorite in Austin for great coffee and just hanging out. Amy's ice cream is across the street along with The Cosmopolitan Club for great blues. Many of the restaurants offer live music, so leave your car at the motel and walk down S. Congress Ave to enjoy Austin at its best.

Room Tip: Room 117 has the best shower -- rain head and hand-held sprayer. Great AC, quiet, park at your door.
