You can't really understand Austin until you go to Town Lake (also called Lady Bird Lake, the Hike & Bike Trail or just the Trail). From Austin High School on the South side or the Zachary Scott Theater parking lot on the North, you can walk, run or bike around the lake in 1, 3 and 5 mile loops.

You see the weird, green parrots who shouldn't live here, but do; you see your neighbors out getting fit; you pass the statue of Stevie Ray Vaughan (who was from Dallas); and you watch the runners / students / hippies / oldsters / hipsters / athletes / legislators go by.

You can rent canoes or paddle boards, or you can sit on the banks and just be. You want to try to "get" Austin? Head to the Trail on Town Lake.

You cannot beat a walk, run, or bike ride on the Town Lake (Lady Bird Lake) trail. Love the dog and people watching, being close to the water, and wild parrot sightings. They are green if you are looking for them.

Love this lake- so beautiful and peaceful. I recommend renting a water bike. You don't have to get wet but still enjoy the water. It was my first time and not too hard to do and I am in my late 40's. My son did paddle boarding and I also tried the canoe with my daughter at Barton creek which connects to town lake. There were small turtles swimming nearby. It was a really neat experience!

We walked down from the North Lamar area, and crossed the pedestrian bridge to access the park. We enjoyed the various paths, and really appreciated seeing the public out enjoying their environment. We saw crew teams, dogs playing in the water, swimmers, people on pedal-boats... all just out having a nice day. We ended up coming back at the end of the day via the Congress Avenue Bridge to see the bats at sunset. The park is lovely, and it is one of the many amenities that make Austin a world class city.
