“Lovely animal Sanctuary, well worth a visit!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2013

I love the Austin Zoo for many reasons, but most of all because it's home to rescued animals. It's not your average zoo where the animals are brought in for display and variety reasons. This is one of the reasons they emphasize the name Sanctuary. Funded through donations, this zoo houses many different animals who came here for numerous reasons, but seem to be taken care of well. You can purchase a bag of food to feed to the goats in the enclosed area and there is also a train that departs every hour and circles the outside perimeter of the zoo. Picnic tables are available as well as a airstream trailer with refreshments in the main courtyard.
Again, this is not a big city type zoo with countless different species of animals, but rather a small farm type animal Sanctuary.

My family loves this zoo and my children have grown up going there many times a year.

“A Good Morning Walk”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 8, 2013 via mobile

Not a big city zoo. These animals have been rescued. There were an amazing diversity of animal life to be viewed, from lions, tigers & bears (oh my) to kangaroos, emus & alpaca. Chicken & peacock free ranged. There were goats, deer & llama that could be feed. Children seemed to really enjoy the outing. A great place to visit for a change of pace. Highly recommend going & supporting this zoo.

“Low pressure, relaxing outing, great place to spend a morning.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

The Austin Zoo is a pleasant place to spend a few hours. There wasn't an abundance of exotic animals but they have a good variety of big cats, primates, birds and a few bears, as well as a few assorted reptiles, amphibians and other creatures. I visited on Labor Day and was pleased that it wasn't overcrowded and easy to walk around and spend time viewing the different animals without feeling pressure to move on so others could get a look. I didn't get a chance to ride the train but will be making another trip for that.

“Different, but very cool!”

It is small and out of the way, but animals are close enough to interact with you and are friendly. Its like the movie, "I baught a Zoo".

We liked it!

“Pleasant surprise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2013 via mobile

We went in with low expectations after many people said it wasn't a real zoo, and after having been to major zoos like Brookfield in Chicago and the San Diego zoo. No matter--we loved Austin zoo! The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, great background info on the animals, and the reptile house was a great escape from the heat. With a groupon, this trip was very budget friendly. We loved the fact that these animals weren't taken out of captivity.
