Owner description: Zoo in Austin featuring many animals.

The Austin Zoo isn't really a zoo. There was very little parking on a dirt lot. There were very few animals and it wasn't an educational experience at all. We much prefer the Waco Zoo. For a city this size, it was a total disappointment.

To begin with, this zoo is not the easiest place to find. We had a GPS and did okay. It's off the main highway and at the end of a series of winding streets. The place is on a par with the zoo in Billings, Montana and neither are great places to visit. It's a rescue zoo, which is a good cause, and is nothing like the zoos in Dallas or Ft.Worth. There are no large animals such as elephants, giraffes, rhinos, and hippos. The largest animals in the place are lions and tigers. There's also wolves, primates, and birds. The animals are all in cages and the grounds around the place seemed somewhat crummy. I wouldn't recommend a visit to this zoo.

I've been to this zoo several times with school groups. The main thing you need to understand is this is a not for profit zoo, it is a rescue zoo. In fact, if you would like to donate money, supplies or food they would be welcome. So go enjoy the animals but don't expect concrete paths, water features, etc. that most large zoos provide. Go and enjoy the outdoors and the animals but go with realistic expectations for the nature of the zoo itself. And help the animals that this zoo provides a safe home to live in.

We visited the Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary a few weeks ago and overall I was disappointed and unimpressed. While I understand and appreciate the purpose and mission of the Sanctuary, to provide a safe place for abused, neglected and discarded animals, it was not a particularly nice place or real hospitable.

The enclosures were very primitive, more like cages than the enclosures you see at modern zoos that have lots of vegetation and space for the animals. Many enclosures were very small and provided limited room for the animals. A lot of the enclosures were unclean and unkept looking. There was an area with tigers I believe with a waterfall and the water was green and super gross looking.

Because it is an animal sanctuary and they have rescued a lot of their animals, many of the animals on display were in rough shape. It was sad to see animals, such as some of the monkeys that looked like they'd been test animals and had their hair ripped out or something.

The paths throughout the Sanctuary were dirt and rock, mostly uneven and definitely rough walking. This would not be a good place to bring an elderly person who has trouble walking or someone in a wheelchair.

I hate to say it but given my experience at the Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary I would not recommend it and I would not go back. It's just not my kind of place.

Not your typical zoo. It really DOESN'T have many bells and whistles. It's a non-profit sanctuary for animals that have been rescued. Definitely worth seeing, and enjoyable for kids. The animals seem to be in good spirits. The place runs solely on admissions and donations, so they make do with what they have. The animals are in better condition than they've probably ever been in. The volunteers that work with the animals love what they do. They have a list of ways you can help them out, things you can donate to their cause.... I think it's a worthy establishment, and it didn't cost much. I wish I could give more to this place.
