Owner description: The Austin bridge is where nearly 1.5 million bats live.

The bat flight is pretty cool to see; any spot on the bridge is a good one, just be sure to be there a little bit before sunset so that you don't miss the bats. Fair warning though, the guano smells bad; it picks up when the bats start moving and flying.

Living in Austin I have taken countless visitors to see the bats come out. I prefer watching from the bridge rather than the lawn down by the hike & bike trail. The bat colony is so large and i'm always impressed by how long it takes for them all to come out - I can't imagine how they fit under there! I think this worth checking out, and it is free!

Visited at the end of September and only went on the advice of a bartender who suggested I go and take a look at a 'very impressive sight'. Arrived about 30 minutes before dusk and went on top of the bridge (again on the advice of locals). Once the bats started to leave it continued for at least 20 minutes and although difficult to take a good photo in the fading light I am glad I made the effort to go and watch the bats.

You have to view this to believe it and be prepared because there will be a crowd. Gather at sundown and be ready for the millions of bats that come flying out from under the bridge. Children LOVE the action. It is a favorite of tourists and locals alike. Get there early
