It is so fun to see the bats come out in the evening! Do stay up on the bridge. I went down close to the river by the Austin American Statesman office and the bats come out very very close to you and seem to be touching the top of your head! I definitely won't be standing under the bridge again!

We had a long long wait, but no bats to be seen. And no seating, so bring chairs to wait for 2 hours. Bats must have flown to mexico the day before, oh well

This is an amazing experience to see the thousands of bats all flowing out from under the bradge at the same time. Since it is a popular event be sure to get there early to find parking.

We were in Austin over Thanksgiving and thought we were too late for this experience - so happy we were wrong!
We could smell the bats during our hike around the lake when near Congress Bridge. We went onto the bridge around 5:15 and only had to wait a few minutes for the bats. There was a seemingly never ending string of bats flying out from under the brdige and sweeping across the dusky sky. We were looking at a ribbon of these incredible creatures. Truly a remarkable experience.

One of the fun things about Austin is the fact that several major attractions have multiple names. One of the best examples is the body of water that the Congress Avenue Bridge spans. It's Town Lake. It's also the Colorado River (The Texas one, not the Grand Canyon one). It's also Lady Bird Lake. Another example of this is the Congress Avenue Bridge itself. In order to honor former Democratic Governor Ann Richards the folks in charge renamed it the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge. Ann was famous for her humor. It was at the 1988 Democratic National convention as Keynote speaker that she said, "Poor George, he can't help it — he was born with a silver foot in his mouth."

When one considers that Texas is now pretty solidly under Republican control, you have to wonder if the "good old boys" didn't get a huge chuckle when renaming the Bat Bridge for Ann.
